10 Sep 2022This is a mixed bag of a walk. I loved walking through the Hamstone villages of Montacute, Stoke-sub-Hamdon and Martock. They are full of interesting buildings that are hundreds of years old, and I've always loved the colour of the stone. The route also takes you through Ham Hill Country Park one of my favourite places to take the dog. Using The Monarchs Way you first climb through woodland on your way to the war memorial at the top of the hill where there are stunning views.
On the other hand there are 2 stretches of road walking that I really didn't enjoy. I walked from Yeovil and the first stretch is on the outskirts of the town along Montacute Road. At times you can walk on the verge, but staying on the road is easier. This road isn't really busy, but there is traffic to watch for. The second stretch of road walking is between Stoke-sub-Hamdon and Martock along Stoke Road. This road is much busier, but thankfully there is a verge to walk on. Neither stretch is too long, but they knock a star off the walk for me.
There is a minor plotting error in Yeovil, about where you leave the cycle/footpath to join Preston Road, but on the ground the route is obvious.
There are pubs at Montacute, Ham Hill, and Stoke, and of course at either end. Also a bus service between Martock and Yeovil Mon-Sat.

01 May 2021Absolutely fine route for able body persons, but following the ethos of Slow Ways, this route is not suitable for all. The route takes in the woods around Ham Hill. The tracks here are steep in places, rough underfoot (many roots and large stones), and is very muddy in the winter. Couple of stiles on route, and some kissing gates (only the ones at Martock upgraded to the new standard).
Some on road walking required around the outskirts of Yeovil and between Martock and Stoke sub Hamdon - these roads can be busy.
Cows in the fields near Martock.
Good views from Ham Hill as always, with an opportunity for a refreshment break at the Prince of Wales on the way.
