Description

Addresses the level crossing and other issues with ManIps 1. Hope it's ok. Will update description once there are some reviews.

Stopping places at Stutton, Tattingstone White Horse and Jimmy's Farm and Wildlife Park.

Edited:
The first review found that the route is unclear around Jimmy's Farm. Unfortunately the Ordnance Survey and Open Street Maps disagree on where the paths should be - including the position of the level crossing which is kinda wild! See the attached pictures with the route overlaid in in pink.

I'd be happy to upload an altered version that fits better but can't tell from my desk where it should be. If anyone can advise, maybe using those map pictures, or preferably by send me a gps file of their walk

Surveys

We are working to build-up a picture of what routes look like. To do that we are asking volunteers to survey routes so that we can communicate features, obstacles and challenges that may make a route desirable or not.

Slow Ways surveyors are asked to complete some basic online training, but they are not vetted. If you are dependent on the survey information being correct in order to complete a route, we recommend that you think critically about the information provided. You may also wish to wait until more than one survey has been completed.

A very beautiful walk out of Manningtree tracing around the estuary edge with glimpses of the Dedham Vale landscape.

We enjoyed the various pathways that encountered different bodies of water along this route.

The views of Ipswich as we descended down into the city were an enjoyable way to reach our destination.

Starting with a stunning view of the River Stour, you will walk along clear and enjoyable footpaths. There would be big stretches of the trip with gravel. Referring to earlier reviewer Thom Brisco’s explanations regarding clarifications of the route.

Setting out from Manningtree, the initial stretches of this walk skirt the edges of the River Stour and are very beautiful. Turning north, the walk follows a gentle mixture of paths, lanes, and field tracks.

Passing Jimmy’s Farm & Wildlife Park, Slow Ways’ recommended route (marked in blue) would benefit from some adjustment. I have attached an image clarifying the correct route of paths across the fields (marked in red) and the important position of the railway level crossing.

The walk into Ipswich is challenging on tired legs with hard hilly footpaths taking you up and down into the city.

Nice mixture of paths, none overgrown. Pretty flat except the final section through the housing estates of Ipswich. Highly recommended stop at the Tattingstone White Horse pub for refreshments. The fields north of Tattingstone lack visible footpaths where they've been ploughed but still perfectly passable. Some clarity of the footpath around Jimmy’s farm needed as I lost the footpath going through the farm rather than around it.

Edit: The railway level crossing is correct on OS maps (south of the current slowway route). My mistake was to go into Jimmy’s farm, instead I should’ve gone to the north west corner of the car park and cut across the field.

Hi Clive, glad you liked the route!
I'd be happy to redraw and upload a better version. Could you help me? I was uncertain about that section near Jimmy's Farm when I drew the route. The paths shown on Ordnance Survey maps and Open Street Maps don't match up, not even the location of the rail crossing, which was pretty surprising. I couldn't find any other reliable clues so I went for the OS line, as it's theoretically the Right of Way. My map drawing software uses the OSM system so it doesn't snap the route to fit the OS line, maybe it's not close enough in practice. Was it around the buildings where it was a problem?
I've uploaded screenshots of the OS and OSM maps with the route line on top so you can see what I was choosing from?
