Surveys

We are working to build-up a picture of what routes look like. To do that we are asking volunteers to survey routes so that we can communicate features, obstacles and challenges that may make a route desirable or not.

Slow Ways surveyors are asked to complete some basic online training, but they are not vetted. If you are dependent on the survey information being correct in order to complete a route, we recommend that you think critically about the information provided. You may also wish to wait until more than one survey has been completed.

Help people know more about this route by volunteering to submit a survey.

Great walk - doesn't feel as long as it is because of the variation.

The highlight - just over half way through the walk - is a path which takes you round Leeds Castle, giving a different view from the wrong/rarely photographed side.

Overall the majority of this route was ok for walkers but not suitable for wheelers. I walked thisis in 2 parts. First from Maidstone to Leeds Castle and then Leeds Castle to Lenham.
There are many styles and gates on the route and some road crossing needed notably across the A20 where care needed.
I lost the route on 2 separate occasions. once near Chambers farm above Stoneacre and secondly after Chegworth Court Farm. This is for more experienced walkers who can confidently find routes footpaths byways across fields etc. On route there was signage across a partially grown rapeseed (waist high) field and was inaccessible without diverting.
In sequence the first section from Maidstone Museum to Mote Park is road/pavement walking though town. From Mote Park this leads in to Downswood and then from St Nicholas Church across fields. Then path to Otham Green and from below Stoneacre up field path to Chambers Farm ( fruit growing), using marked tracks across farm by Polytunnels. Then paths across road at Arnold Court to Brogden, Church Lane and finally entering Leeds Castle park. The second section involved going the churchyard in brromfield across Fields and edge of copses to Chegworth court Farm. Crossing road and then through farm taking care to find path which is marked but a little difficult to locate. Then across fields where I took a wrong turn and only realised the error on my return . It is important to turn towards Spion cop and drop down towards the Watercress fields as marked but actually nice cottages. The last section into Harrietsham and then Lenham is more straightforward with occasional alleyway paths and pavement walking with road crossing. Please note some overgrown paths and hard to follow field crossings and route is not the simplest though doable with some persistance/flexibility.
