12 Feb 2023I left the van at Sarn train station and jumped on the train up to Maesteg. There’s something very exciting starting your adventure by train!
At the start point it’s definitely worth looking at the Town Hall. It’s a stunning old building currently being refurbished to include a new glass atrium, studio theatre, cinema space, a café/mezzanine bar, and a modern library. It should be open in 2023.
The first 1.5km is on pavements until you leave the town. It then skirts around the Garth with far reaching views on Maesteg and the Llynfi valley. It then follows the river through fields with limited gradient.
At Shwt there is a bit of road walking but I didn’t see any cars and then through the woods. After the woods is the climb up to Bettws. It’s not too bad and there’s lots to see around the manicured grounds.
At Bettws there is a 100 metre section of narrow road walking with the cars whizzing by, so please take care.
At Bettws is a ‘life centre’ containing a library, cafe and toilets. There is a shop opposite but it looked closed when I passed.
As you exit Bettws you go off road and enter the north entrance to Bryngarw country park. It’s a wonderful place to stop off and have some refreshments and I spent a bit of time watching the ducks feed! Nearby is an oriental garden, large kids play park and lots of interesting features to have a look at.
After leaving Bryngarw, you pass through Brynmenyn and follow an off road cycle path alongside the river that takes you into Sarn.
Although muddy in sections the mix of scenery and terrain was one of the best the walks I’ve had for a long time.
