Description

I felt that Lutste Two had too many minor inaccuracies to be easily followed but this is essentially the same route as Lutste Two.
From Luton station the route follows a busy road to a cemetery and heads uphill. No gates to the cemetery, no lights either. More suburban walking then steps down to a walkway over a roundabout. Uphill again along Eaton Green Road. Near the end of this road the pavement ends and there is a verge which starts narrow and gets wider, shallow ditches have to be hopped over. Cross Darley Road into a field. A footpath, with good views of planes landing at the airport, takes you alongside and through fields to Breachwood Green Village. More fields to Bendish the down Long Lane which starts off rutted and muddy but becomes a good compacted grit track with great views. The path behind Whitwell passes around a recreation ground and fields. Diversion needed if you wanted to visit the village centre. After crossing the River Mimram its uphill to Eastall past the church in St Paul's Walden. There is a (B651) road crossing past the church with quite a high step down onto the road and up off the road. A mix of tracks and field edges takes you to Dyers Lane, a track which becomes ever more littered as you approach the motorway. After passing under the motorway, urban roads and underpasses take you to the carpark which is Stevenage Leisure Park and the Station.
Generally follows the Chiltern Way and the Hertfordshire Way.
This route is the same as Kimste (Kimpton to Stevenage) from St Pauls Walden to Stevenage.

17 Mar 2024 Winter

I walked from Luton to Stevenage.
Pavement walking along urban roads up and down hill (steps) get you out of Luton. The cemetery, however, gives good views over Luton from quiet green space. A verge takes you to lovely open fields of rape, the small yellow flowers just beginning to show, and interesting views of the airport and planes landing.
From here there is a mix of farmland, tracks, and small villages all the way to Stevenage. The hills give ever changing views across the beautiful Bedfordshire countryside. Some footpaths are better than others, same for the tracks, some deep puddles after a wet February. Good variety from narrow wooded paths to wide open fields with big skies, quaint villages to carparks. Stevenage roads are dull but there are no roads to cross.
There are places to eat in Whitwell but I ate sandwiches on a bench outside St Pauls Walden church.
Overall a really good walk.
Some ditches and big steps, gates and kissing gates, narrow paths and some mud (in winter) provide minor challenges for walkers but obstacles for wheels.
From just after Whitwell the route is the same as Kimste.
