Surveys

We are working to build-up a picture of what routes look like. To do that we are asking volunteers to survey routes so that we can communicate features, obstacles and challenges that may make a route desirable or not.

Slow Ways surveyors are asked to complete some basic online training, but they are not vetted. If you are dependent on the survey information being correct in order to complete a route, we recommend that you think critically about the information provided. You may also wish to wait until more than one survey has been completed.

Help people know more about this route by volunteering to submit a survey.

This is a beautiful walk with lots to offer - relaxing waterside strolls and challenging climbs!

We started this walk from Loweswater, so the first part of it was very smooth and tranquil. The path follows Crummock Water and has beautiful views of the fells around Loweswater and Buttermere. For the most part, the paths are in good condition, but get much better around Buttermere.

We went to Buttermere for coffee and cake at Syke Farm Tea Room, which is a great place to rest and eat! They have a good selection of hot food and apparently really delicious ice cream (a recommendation on Twitter).

The path around Buttermere is well-maintained and wide for easy walking, though it can be busy! Near the end of the water, we took the path climbing up Scarth Gap Pass in between Haystacks and High Crag. It is easy to follow, but rocky in places, so special care should be taken in wet weather.

Black Sail Hut is a short walk beyond the pass, and it's a great YHA hut that has an honesty cafe and some indoor seating - a welcome sight for us in the middle of wet and windy weather! There are a lot of walkers passing through, so even those it was really remote, in the busy walking season you'll definitely have people coming and going if you find any trouble.

From Black Sail Hut, we headed towards another climb to Black Sail Pass, one of the many ways to get to Wasdale Head, This path was grassy and rocky and a bit more difficult than Scarth Gap, but still very doable! The descent into Wasdale Head is gorgeous, with sweeping views of the fells in Wasdale. Wasdale Head Inn offered a warm and fab place for resting after the walk, with drinks, food, and plenty of water to welcome walkers.
