Description

This route from Looe to Torpoint follows the South West Coast Path as far as Tregantle Fort, before heading along some quiet lanes for the journey into Torpoint. The coast path through Tregantle Fort is within a danger area, and so is sometimes closed when live firing is taking place, but the diversion is clearly marked, on both the map and the ground. The St. John Inn in St. John is worth a visit

Surveys

We are working to build-up a picture of what routes look like. To do that we are asking volunteers to survey routes so that we can communicate features, obstacles and challenges that may make a route desirable or not.

Slow Ways surveyors are asked to complete some basic online training, but they are not vetted. If you are dependent on the survey information being correct in order to complete a route, we recommend that you think critically about the information provided. You may also wish to wait until more than one survey has been completed.

This was for me an excellent opportunity to use the trains to connect mid devon to Cornwall.
Easy connection and a simple ferry on foot out off Torpoint, the coat path has some lovely scenery and handy pubs along the way.
If also planning on stopping over the night looe would be the ideal place for the night and a swim in the sea.
A nice simple walk.

A great route, which I walked from Torpoint to Looe. There was however one access issue. On the day I walk it, a Saturday in June. The vehicle gate from Tregantle car park to Tregantle Fort was locked, and I suspect it usually is. The access point for pedestrians is on the Military road where you follow a marked path up near the other side of the locked vehicle gate. I have included a map below of the preferred route. Otherwise the route along the coast path is easy to follow and quite stunning. The pathway around HMS Raleigh was a little overgrown but otherwise fine. The lanes were very quiet. There is a good pub stop at The Inn on the shore at Downderry and another The Smugglers at Seaton. cafes and ice cream stands also available.

This route follows the coast path for a significant portion of its length, with all the attendant pluses (well waymarked, lovely views) and minuses (steep and hard work in places, not great in poor weather). The climbs out of Looe and Downderry are good examples!

After Tregantle fort it follows mostly quiet lanes and footpaths into Torpoint. This is fine, and probably the best route available. I might have diverted into St. John to visit the pub, but other than that, it works well and is easy to follow.

All said, a worthy addition to the network.
