Hugh Hudson
02 Jul 2023Walked from Llandudno to Colwyn Bay. A fairly direct route, but some of the paths are little used and a little hard to follow, and apart from the final section along the beach at Colwyn Bay and the sounds of the gulls, it feels very little like a coastal walk. The coast path might be better, though a lot more of that is roads.
From Llandudno Station, we head north east along Vaughan Street then right along Conway Road, the main road into Llandudno. I walked down the east side, and at one point barriers force a detour down a side street. Eventually the main street bears right and we head right on a signposted path through a narrow alleyway. We then cross Queens Road and continue along the unadopted Lon Fferm. Where the farm track turns sharp left we bear right along another track past a heap of gravel, then take the charming but rough and narrow path left through the woods, then skirts St Davids College on the left. Beyond the wood we follow the right hand edge of two fields (ignoring two better trodden paths), then head left across more fields and right along a farm track (I presume this is a right of way, there are no private notices. We come to a busy road which has a path through the left hand verge, then go right, passing the Queens Head pub. We go right again at the T junction then left up through fields and through a farm yard, then down steeply on a slightly awkward narrow paths with steps and head high thorns.
Beyond Pen y Bont Road the path is clear, though it passes through deep undergrowth to cross a bridge and emerge by a playground. We follow the road up the hill, turn right and follow narrow paths with more steps and lots of tree roots through the woods below Bryn Euryn. Eventually (if you pick the right path!) you should reach a zigzag path that descends to the fence above the A55 then follows it up to Llannerch Road West. There is one slightly awkward road crossing (detour left uphill to a pelican crossing if necessary) after which we go straight on to emerge on the promenade above Colwyn Bay beach. Opposite the truncated pier we follow a path right through an underpass under the railway to the square outside Colwyn Bay station and the meeting point.
