Description
This route uses most of the Heart Of Wales Rail Trail - the section out of the east of Llanwrtyd Wells is boggy and flat so I decided to use the country lanes (which are incredibly quiet) instead to get up the side of the valley for views before joining the Heart of Wales trail at Llangammarch. This is a big wide valley and you can get some long distance views - apparently on a good day you can see Pumlumon Fawr. Its a fairly easy route to follow. There is one very steep section near Llangammarch and the MoD firing area but the views are great off the top. Don't be put off by the country lanes as they save a lot of time wading through bog and mud - they are very quiet I only met two other cars. By the MoD firing area keep an eye out for Buzzards as its a good spot for them. Apart from the towns you are likely not going to bump into anyone else - so if you want isolation, peace and quiet this is a good route. The area just to the west of Builth Wells is beautiful with streams, rolling hills and woods. I used the bus between the towns as the train station at Builth is quite a way out of town

Surveys
We are working to build-up a picture of what routes look like. To do that we are asking volunteers to survey routes so that we can communicate features, obstacles and challenges that may make a route desirable or not.
Slow Ways surveyors are asked to complete some basic online training, but they are not vetted. If you are dependent on the survey information being correct in order to complete a route, we recommend that you think critically about the information provided. You may also wish to wait until more than one survey has been completed.

27 Nov 2022Great view all along the valley. Fairly easy going as mostly country lanes to the eastern section and these were very quiet in terms of traffic but still afforded great views. There's a steep climb up the firing area - please read the warning signs ! Its very windy at the top as well ! Lots of buzzards on this route - its amazing watching them circle and then swoop down the hill. Both towns are lovely little spa towns - but Llanwrtyd Wells is the smallest town in Great Britain (but it has a hotel / inn and shop). Good walk to blow the cobwebs away - a very quiet route though. All the natives are incredibly friendly.
