Surveys
We are working to build-up a picture of what routes look like. To do that we are asking volunteers to survey routes so that we can communicate features, obstacles and challenges that may make a route desirable or not.
Slow Ways surveyors are asked to complete some basic online training, but they are not vetted. If you are dependent on the survey information being correct in order to complete a route, we recommend that you think critically about the information provided. You may also wish to wait until more than one survey has been completed.

03 Nov 2023I can't speak to the barbed wire area spoken about in the other review, though I'd say you could also take a right onto Stoneyholm Road from the main road (also Stoneyholm Road...) and get onto the cycle track slightly further back. There definitely aren't access issues at that point.
It's a very well maintained cycle track, some nice views on the way over to Lochwinnoch and well sighted the whole way so no surprise cyclists (or pedestrians) round a blind corner.
This is the quickest route, undoubtedly, but a nicer and more challenging walk is to leave Kilbirnie on Dipple Road and walk that until it merges with a paved section of the A760 near to Lochwinnoch.

15 Jan 2023Review of Slow Ways Route Kilbloc one (Kilbirnie to Lochwinnoch)
I walked this route on a very rainy day in January 2023. Almost immediately I encountered an obstacle in the form of a barbed wire fence just beyond the point where the route leaves Stoneyholm Road in Kilbirnie and attempts to join the Johnstone to Kilbirnie Cycleway (at NS32135492). While the fence was fairly easy to climb, it would definitely present a barrier to some travellers and is really not very satisfactory. The point at which the route leaves the metalled road is on the left (north) side of the road immediately before the road crosses a disused railway. There IS an alternative, on the right (south) side of the road which requires a scramble down a muddy bank. Instead, I would suggest turning right off the main Stoneyholm Road about 50 metres earlier (at NS31885480) then joining the cycleway at NS32035469. From this point on, the route is simple, clear and enjoyable (although feeling a little lonely and remote in places) all the way to its ending in the centre of Lochwinnoch.

17 Feb 2024Like Martin, I don't understand the issues raised by Wellchoughed. I walk this route quite often and have had no problems at that point by using either the ;scramble down a muddy bank (not difficult) or the more formal route via the cycle-path access. Well-surfaced path is well-used by cyclists, dog-walkers, etc.
