Description

A fairly quiet yet varied route which goes over the top of the hill between Kenley and Caterham. There's a nice looking pub mid-route.

I created this route pretty much on the hoof, for reasons that have little to do with the original route. But it turns out to be almost exactly the same length, it has 50m less climb/fall, plus the steep bits are slightly less gruelling. Win-win

Surveys

We are working to build-up a picture of what routes look like. To do that we are asking volunteers to survey routes so that we can communicate features, obstacles and challenges that may make a route desirable or not.

Slow Ways surveyors are asked to complete some basic online training, but they are not vetted. If you are dependent on the survey information being correct in order to complete a route, we recommend that you think critically about the information provided. You may also wish to wait until more than one survey has been completed.

I started at Kenley and there was a long drag up Kenley Lane although there was little traffic. The common is pleasant and I went further than the route suggests and joined the London LOOP to get to Old Lodge Lane. The rest of the walk is fine. There are toilets and cafes at Chaldon Road, Caterham and Waitrose and Morrisons at Caterham Valley near the Station.
I branched off at Queen's Park onto Redcat to Redhill (photo #13).

I walked this on a now-drying wet saturday afternoon, from Caterham to Kenley.

I have nothing to add to Daisy's excellent review, although I rate it 5 stars. Here are some photos too. I made one nice change — after crossing Old Lodge Lane I went straight across, instead of going west first for a little bit. This got me onto a field with lots of butterflies (photo #6). It's not worth making a new route for though.

Waller Lane out of Caterham (photo #1), residential footpath (photo #2), Coulsdon Common (photo #3), Caterham Drive (photo #4), the observatory (photo #5), wood to Hayes Lane (photo #7), Kenley Lane (photo #8, #9), the station (photo #10).

Glad you liked my route Derick! I can't remember why I did't give it 5 stars myself now. The short bit on Old Lodge Lane was just to make the route go past the pub in the middle third but I'd probably use your version if I walked it again.

Pretty soon after leaving the station you turn off into a steep, very quiet, access-only lane from Caterham up
to Caterham on the Hill. Next about 500m along a fairly busy section of high street, then through quiet streets and alleyways until reaching the edge of Coulsdon Common. From here the route switches between woodland and leafy residential streets for a while. Although at the highest point there is an unexpected observatory in the middle of a few small fields. It's (physically) downhill from here. More woodland, more leafy housing, including the leafiest of them all, Welcomes Road, which is marked Private Land, no *vehicular* access. After cutting through Kenley Common, the route goes down Kenley Lane, between field and woods to start but then the woods become housing, but behind fences and trees, and feeling much like you're still within woodland. This is a long steep section too. At the bottom of the hill you are within close sight of Kenley Station. If you see the train and already have a ticket/oyster then it could be worth running for the (half-hourly-at-weekends) train. The path with oyster touch points you could swipe as you run is shorter than you may have guessed. In other words, I missed the train but needn't have!

I got some route advice from locals along the way, occasionally unprompted. I couldn't take it all but: Welcomes Road is a long wide, quiet road and following it was recommended. Might be slightly nicer road walking than Kenley Lane, but with no woodland path or field-sides. Three people suggested going up to, then around the aerodrome, which sounds lovely but the road crossing sounds too problematic to actually recommend.
