Help connect Caterham
Many Slow Ways have several route options. Some will be better than others, or good for different reasons.
Our goal is for each Slow Way to have at least one route that is verified and surveyed. To be verified – and get its snail badge – a route needs at least three positive reviews.
Give a hike and help get a for every one of Caterham’s Slow Ways.

The route is well marked on the map and easy to follow on the ground, though I missed the path from Nutfield Marsh Road and took the footpath a bit further down the road after Peyton's Cottages. There's a steep climb up onto the North Downs so it is quite a strenuous walk. The section of the North Downs Way has impressive views southwards....
Bostal Boy
- A few places with steps, including one surprisingly long section of steep, uneven steps, but there is a good handrail to steady yourself...
Ingrina
I knocked off one star - slightly less direct, motorway noise (inescapable in this area), and some paths were quite steep and slippy (chalk can be when it's wet). Steep and narrow paths, gates and kissing gates, uneven ground and long flights of steps make this unsuitable for wheels....
Strider
Then there's a good surfaced path that leads to Nutfield Marsh Road near the pub (Inn on the Pond) passing Glebe Lake. Surrey County Council tell me that the repair work is complex and won't be done soon although Sustrans are on the case. The diversion is to continue up the road about 350 metres then turn left on path FP643....
JohnMyerson
I started at Kenley and there was a long drag up Kenley Lane although there was little traffic....

I can't agree with the other reviews as there are a number of problems on this route including some road walking where there are no pavements. The first two miles are fine to Willey Park Farm but the route down to Spring Bottom Lane is a steep, narrow and rutted path (FP159) which ends in steps down to the road....

Happy Valley can get rather busy. There are some significant hills to be aware of!...

There is an alternative way via Merstham and crosses Hilltop Lane in Chaldon. It’s slightly quicker than this route....

Waller Lane out of Caterham (photo #1), residential footpath (photo #2), Coulsdon Common (photo #3), Caterham Drive (photo #4), the observatory (photo #5), wood to Hayes Lane (photo #7), Kenley Lane (photo #8, #9), the station (photo #10)....

From Godstone the route soon goes along a path with a fence on one side (photo #1), and after crossing a field (photo #2) it enters the Surrey Hills AONB along a narrow lane (not busy, photo #3). After crossing over the M25 (photo #4), the route goes up, with some steep (photo #5) sections to come to a lovely view at the top from the North Downs Way (photo #6). The route then slowly and gently slopes down along good gravel paths (photo #7) before ending up going along a quiet residential neighbourhood without pavement (photo #8) before finishing at the station, where there is lots of traffic (photo #9)....

More woodland, more leafy housing, including the leafiest of them all, Welcomes Road, which is marked Private Land, no *vehicular* access. I couldn't take it all but: Welcomes Road is a long wide, quiet road and following it was recommended. Might be slightly nicer road walking than Kenley Lane, but with no woodland path or field-sides...

Great route, well plotted and a pleasant walk. One of the 4 lanes is permanently closed (markings and signage) so its an ad-hoc extension of the 'traffic island' on the median, so the crossing is of two lanes and then one lane between passing cars....

This is the route I take from Caterham down to Godstone and a pint at the hare and hounds. I’ll walk it again to upload some pictures. There are a few routes but this is the best way to avoid cars....

Right out of Caterham this route goes up a steep hill, along a fairly busy road....

Derick Rethans added Coucat two, a new walk from Coulsdon to Caterham
Walk this routeHere it follows the Farthing Downs Tree Belt, instead of the top-of-the hill route that the LOOP follows into Coulsdon. After going past Coulsdon South station, the route then finishes as Coulsdon Town along an industrial estate....
Derick Rethans
A much better route than Catoxt two which it joins at the bottom of Oxted Downs although it's nearly two miles longer....
JohnMyerson
I enjoyed this route a great deal, having started at Ewell earlier in the day. It's a great way to conclude this part of the route. Fine walking, some lovely woodland and enticing views....
John Scott
A good route across Farthing Downs and Happy Valley on easy paths. Can be a bit muddy in places but generally the paths are pretty wide....
andymorgs
An improved version of netcat one which uses a lovely quiet back lane in Caterham, (the local preference), rather than walking uphill along the hectic B road. After climbing the hill at Caterham I walked along footpaths and quiet roads, enjoying the peace and quiet....

A fascinating mix of village, farmland, open public spaces and rural landscapes....
John Scott
I walked half of this in the rain so the slopes were slippery....

Livestock notes: there may be horses in one field on the slope to the west of Woldingham; at Oxted Downs (National Trust) there is a ‘cattle grazing’ sign at the top of the hill, but no sign of cows when I went through....

Regular trains to East Croydon and bus 407 to Croydon and Sutton just around the corner in Croydon Road....

Steep descent from Netherne village and from Caterham on the Hill to Caterham Station....

Jane Taylor added Netcat two, a new walk from Netherne On-The-Hill to Caterham
Walk this routeIt may be just about possible to make it out walking up the hill, but if you are at the top looking down it simply isn’t there, and the hill is too steep and ground too uneven to make following the line on the map a safe decision....
Jane Taylor
So steep that your feet start entering parts of your shoes they’ve never been before....
LondonIn360
Fairly steep in places and narrow, rough paths (some shared with horses)....
JohnMyerson
Some very steep sections of loose gravel & muddy sections. No facilities en-route Some road walking...
