Surveys
We are working to build-up a picture of what routes look like. To do that we are asking volunteers to survey routes so that we can communicate features, obstacles and challenges that may make a route desirable or not.
Slow Ways surveyors are asked to complete some basic online training, but they are not vetted. If you are dependent on the survey information being correct in order to complete a route, we recommend that you think critically about the information provided. You may also wish to wait until more than one survey has been completed.

01 May 2023A fairly dull road walk, but it has the odd problem with it.
First, the route connecting Cowal and Maryhill Roads goes through an area currently undergoing building works, so there is no access here at the moment.
Second, there are steps from Maryhill Road to the residential roads of Gilslochill.
Thirdly, many of the roads lack ramps or low pavements, which, combined with the above, excludes many wheeled users.
It's an okay route for foot-only users, but not the best option. I'd humbly recommend KILGIL Two.

23 Apr 2023Route is pleasant enough along reasonably quiet roads (I ran it on a Sunday). Nice views out to the hills to the north and you at least pass some green spaces even if there is no option to walk through them.

23 Apr 2023I should add that Kelgil 2 which I did as my return is a much better route and more in keeping with slow ways. In terms of time, I do not think there is much in it

06 Apr 2022Review of SlowWays Route Kelgil1 (Kelvindale—Gilshochill)
I walked this route in reverse (Gilshochill to Kelvindale) on a wet afternoon in April 2022. I found the route easy to follow and quite interesting as it led me through parts of Glasgow I rarely visit. It starts at the unassuming Gilshochill Station (deserted when I passed) and zig-zags along residential streets until it drops down to cross Maryhill Road. At this point, the route map suggests cutting the corner to reach Cowal Road. However that is no longer possible because the corner plot is being developed for housing. Instead a simple adjustment is required, entailing following the pavement around the corner. As the previous reviewer points out, Cowal Road is a bit of a slog uphill then downhill with only the traffic for company (although the local authority has done its best by planting lots of flowering bushes and trees along the roadside). This part of the route is perfectly safe but I agree that diverting along the canal path would provide a nicer end to the walk. Nevertheless I have no issues with the walk and no hesitation in recommending it, should you have the need or desire to get from Gilshochill to Kelvindale or vice versa.

31 May 2021Love views from the peak of Duncairn Street. The final section on Cowal Road is not pleasant, too many fast cars. I would cross Maryhill Rd at The White House and finish on the canal.
