Surveys
We are working to build-up a picture of what routes look like. To do that we are asking volunteers to survey routes so that we can communicate features, obstacles and challenges that may make a route desirable or not.
Slow Ways surveyors are asked to complete some basic online training, but they are not vetted. If you are dependent on the survey information being correct in order to complete a route, we recommend that you think critically about the information provided. You may also wish to wait until more than one survey has been completed.

31 Jul 2024Review of Slow Ways route Irvtro one (Irvine to Troon)
I walked this moderate-length route on a bright afternoon in July 2024. It leaves Irvine Station and heads down the picturesque Harbour Road before entering the Beach Park and setting off through the dunes. There then follows a lengthy section on sandy paths where the going can be quite challenging. Eventually it is necessary to drop down onto the beach (due to the proximity of the golf course to the edge of the dunes). From here, it is a fairly straightforward walk to the end of the beach with three minor drainage channels to be crossed (two can be stepped over and the third has a bridge), whereupon the first houses of Barassie are reached. The next section along Barassie front is on mown grass (a relief after so much sand walking). The route then shifts to pavement for a loop past the marina, up onto the ballast bank, down again onto south bay and finally arriving at Troon Town Hall. An interesting and scenic route with just enough challenging terrain to maintain the walker’s interest but no significant obstacles to overcome. Unsuitable for cyclists due to the middle section on sand. No facilities along the way but plenty at either end. Highly recommended.

08 Mar 2023Beautiful walk along the beach from Troon to Irvine. Easy going and possible at high tide. Sandy underfoot. If it is windy you can walk in the dunes as you get closer to Irvine.

30 Apr 2021Beautiful walk, mainly on a sandy beach with stunning views to Arran. Not really suitable for wheelchair users which is why I have given it 4 stars instead of 5. Train station at either end and lots of excellent places to eat.
