Surveys
We are working to build-up a picture of what routes look like. To do that we are asking volunteers to survey routes so that we can communicate features, obstacles and challenges that may make a route desirable or not.
Slow Ways surveyors are asked to complete some basic online training, but they are not vetted. If you are dependent on the survey information being correct in order to complete a route, we recommend that you think critically about the information provided. You may also wish to wait until more than one survey has been completed.

14 Nov 2024Walked this south to north as part of WHW in April 2022. Probably the toughest stretch of the WHW, path is fairly rough and boulder-strewn, the last section between Inversnaid and the northern end of the loch was a bit of a slog, but we started from Balmaha to be fair so quite a long day. Still a great walk, wooded for most of the way so some shelter from the weather and super easy to navigate due to it vaguely following the shoreline the whole way. Bothies available at Rychoan and Doune Byre. Ardleish ferry to Ardlui is a possible variation, great pub in the marina. Facilities (pubs/hotels) at Rowardennan, Inversnaid and Inverarnan, so never feels too remote and a hot meal is never far away if you start to struggle. Would happily recommend.

12 Aug 2024It’s a beautiful walk following the loch but pretty tricky at times. Lots of ups and downs and uneven terrain. It’s still really lush, especially when you happen upon little booths selling snacks for hikers! We had Ben’s flapjacks and they were immense.

08 Aug 2024This is a very challenging hike only suitable for experienced and equipped walkers.
Recent washout in July has meant that some sections are very difficult indeed with paths and bridges washed away and there is a lot of ascent and decent on slippery rocks and routes.
The Loch side section from Rowardennan to the hotel at Inversnaid can be avoided by taking an upper track but there are still slippery and difficult sections to get to the hotel.
The section from Inversnaid is very tough particularly on the rocks around Rob Roy's cave. Discussion with a local guide indicated that there have been a lot of accidents here when the rock is wet and slippery. Pressure from guided groups wanting to overtake adds to the challenge for the individual walker. The only escape from the route is to use the advice of the emergency services - information on posters along the way. Everyone we met thought that this section of the walk was a challenge.
The facilities at the campsite (Beinglas) at the end are excellent and are to be commended for their full range of services. It is still a further kilometre to the Drover's Inn and Inverarnan where there is access to bus transport.

04 Aug 2024Gorgeous day to begin with following Loch Lomond. We got caught in the rain at the end which made things trickier over uneven ground, then marshy before both. A lovely route in fair weather! We stopped over at Doune Byrne, for a food over our heads.
