Surveys
We are working to build-up a picture of what routes look like. To do that we are asking volunteers to survey routes so that we can communicate features, obstacles and challenges that may make a route desirable or not.
Slow Ways surveyors are asked to complete some basic online training, but they are not vetted. If you are dependent on the survey information being correct in order to complete a route, we recommend that you think critically about the information provided. You may also wish to wait until more than one survey has been completed.

23 Jul 2021This is an easy to navigate and relatively flat route that starts in Inverness centre, and travels through some suburban areas before taking in a couple of long trails through forests, then ending on the main road for the last three-and-a-half miles.
The extensive middle portion, which runs on forestry paths, is peaceful, shady on a sunny day, and offers some stunning views across the Moray Firth to the Highlands beyond.
The route is quite straightforward, with only a couple of gates and no styles to pass. However, a tiny section in the first third of the route was boggy for a metre or two, and some of the forestry paths look like they could be poor in wet weather.
The last bit on the road, taking up about a quarter of the route, led to me taking off a couple of stars and not verifying this Slow Way. The route follows the B9091 and B9090 roads, both fairly busy and only have sporadic verges and paths to walk on. For the most part, you'll be walking on the carriageway itself from Croy to Cawdor, so this is a route that could use more work to make it safer and more accessible.
Once you leave Inverness, there are no facilities of any kind until you reach Cawdor, aside from a small Scotmid Co-op shop on Culloden road before you reach the first portion of the forest.
The route ends right outside a church noticeboard in Cawdor, and I'd suggest travelling further up the road where you'll find a village shop and the Cawdor Tavern, a nice pub where I enjoyed a post-walk Guinness. Further on up the road beyond this is Cawdor Castle and gardens, which are also worth visiting.
Mobile and GPS signal was good across the entire route (using Vodafone/Lebara Mobile).
