10 Jun 2024I reviewed this route walking from Stockton to Ingleby Barwick. This is a route of two halves - the first follows the river along quiet, (and in some cases) poorly maintained paths; the second half follows the main road on a well-maintained, shared-use cycle/footpath. The route epitomises the SlowWays dilemma - scenic but lacking accessibility versus practical, wheel-friendly but uninteresting terrain.
The route leaves Stockton town centre through a minor road (pic 1) using a footbridge that gets you down on to the riverside. Along the Riverside from Stockton the route stays close to the water but a couple of pubs and a boathouse prevent you from following the riverbank itself. The path is easy to follow and takes you around each of "obstacles" (pic 2). As you go around the back of the casino, the path comes to an end when it encounters the A1130 bridge. Pass the Burger King on your left and crossover at the traffic lights. Then follow down the side of Bridge House in to a derelict street (pic 3) that leads you back towards the river.
The official path takes you through a gate saying "SG welding has moved" (pic 4) back down to the river again. The small bar at the bottom of the gate will prevent some wheeled users from access - buggies and pushchairs will be able to be lifted across but the mobility scooters and wheelchairs may struggle.
The route then stays close to the river. Walking in May it was already starting to be overgrown (pic 5) so a late summer walk may be tricky. The path widens out when you hit some waste ground (pic 6) - head west through the gap in the large concrete tubes (pic 7) to connect with the Bowesfield Road Industrial estate (pic 8). Proceed south past the motor dealerships until you encounter a small roundabout. Turn right and once you hit the large roundabout, use the pedestrian crossing (pic 9) to cross over onto the west side of the main road. There is a small path that leads on to a well made up joint use cycle and foot path (pic 10).
The path heads south for almost all of the rest of the route (pic 11), following close to road. It is all metalled and has safe crossing on each of the intersections with other roads (pic 12 & 13). The route ends at the rear of Tescos (pic 14).
I enjoyed walking this route and although the second half is a little uninspiring, it felt safe and well maintained.
