Description

There is nothing wrong with ILKSAN 1, but since it is already snailed, and one of the reviewers suggested an alternative might use the Nutbrook Trail, I thought I would investigate this route instead. It is mostly the route I used while walking from Ilkeston to Sandiacre, but I tried one of the paths marked on OpenStreetMap through the woods south of Derby Road, and decided not to use that part of the route because there are Keep Out warning signs at both ends, so although it was clear that the paths are still well used and have proper gates, somebody doesn't want us to use them, and I felt it better not to recommend ignoring the signs as I did! I have borrowed the route from BORILK 1 (which I walked last year) as a better alternative here

10 Jan 2024 Winter

Walked January 2023. A well surfaced route made for easy and safe walking even after recent heavy rains. Straightforward to find and follow as it takes the path of a canal, railway and former railway. Can be accessed at many points. Mainly pleasant countryside. Strong connections to the local industrial heritage add to the interest.Together with Ilksan1 it makes a good circular route that can be walked for leisure.

09 May 2023 Spring

Walked from Ilkeston to Sandiacre on an overcast spring afternoon with a little drizzle. An easy and fairly direct route, which uses the Nutbrook trail (a former railway) and the Erewash canal, with a little pavement walking at the Ilkeston end. The route is mostly surfaced and free of steps and stiles, but there are no facilities in the middle third other than benches, but since this is quite a short route that shouldn't matter. An enjoyable walk.

From the meeting point in Ilkeston market place, we use the pelican crossing to cross to the west side of South Street, then turn right onto Queen's Drive and right down Albert Street, crossing Derby Road and continuing down Belper Street, then right onto Union Road, following it left into Dale View and on onto Spinney Road. A footpath takes us right to The Spinney, which we cross and take the path left to join the Nutbrook Trail, a surfaced path and cycle track on an old railway.

We follow the trail left, through fields and industrial buildings to reach the Erewash canal, where our track stays on the west side until a footbridge by a lock. Here we join the towpath on the east bank which leads us into Sandiacre. Just beyond the bridge under Station Road, we leave the canal and double back up onto the bridges, then use pelican crossings to reach the meeting point left beyond Town Street.
