Surveys

We are working to build-up a picture of what routes look like. To do that we are asking volunteers to survey routes so that we can communicate features, obstacles and challenges that may make a route desirable or not.

Slow Ways surveyors are asked to complete some basic online training, but they are not vetted. If you are dependent on the survey information being correct in order to complete a route, we recommend that you think critically about the information provided. You may also wish to wait until more than one survey has been completed.

10 Oct 2023 Autumn

This was a really lovely walk with a good friend, from Yarm to Hurworth on a very welcome sunny day in October. From Yarm High Street and over the Tees Bridge we were straight onto the Teesdale Way. The whole route was easy to navigate: very well signposted, kissing gates, decking over muddy paths and only one style. The lovely ‘Dipper’ bird signs for the Teesdale Way were plentiful. The route was very pretty indeed, following the meanders of the river, through woodland and skirting arable farmland. The tracks were clear to follow, slightly muddy in places but at no times too close to the river. Good walking boots and a pole or two were very useful on this autumn walk. The views across farmland towards the Cleveland Hills in the distance were superb. Only one small section (about 100 m or so) of the walk near the brick dovecote near Newsham Grange Farm was overgrown with nettles but not a problem with long trousers and a pole/stick. From here the pathway follows the river to Middleton One Row, a very pretty village with a hotel and extensive village green. The path leads down across the green to the river where the route takes you right in front of a couple of houses to a style. The only road walking follows a fairly quiet road into Neasham for about a quarter of a mile or so and then follows the Tees Way road along a broad footpath into Hurworth. We found the distance to be a little longer (using Strava) than stated, being closer to 13 miles. The Bay Horse in Hurworth was open for very welcome refreshments.

10 Oct 2023 Autumn

A fab walk on a really warm October day with my walking Pal. A really well signposted walk and good well set paths along tracks, through woodland and over fields linking Yarm to Hurworth on Tees, for most part hugging the beautiful River Tees.
Our walk turned out to be longer than that recorded on Slow Ways, due to us starting from my home rather than Yarm town centre, but even allowing for that extra walk we made it nearer 13 miles than the recorded 11.5 (using Strava).
Joined the Teesdale Way after crossing the River Tees at the end of Yarm High Street straight onto a great track, easy to follow throughout. Never any question of wondering which way to go, signposts were well sited and plenty of them. Several good well maintained metal gates and/or kissing gates, and just 1 stile along the whole route.
We followed the Slow Ways route on the app, clear to follow and easy to check progress.
The route was in places a little muddy, but with good walking boots and poles it was easy to navigate. None of the walk was actually right next to the river, but always either up on the flood defence wall, or paths set well away from the waters edge . Just a couple of short stretches of road walking, about 1/4 mile just before reaching Neasham on a relatively quiet stretch, and on into Hurworth itself but this latter part offers a safe wide footpath.
Only one part of the walk ( just after Neasham Grange Farm and before we walked past the beautiful red brick dovecote building on the outskirts of Middleton One Row) was the path quite overgrown with nettles. That said at other times of the year this would not be the case!
After passing the dovecote you walk past a lovely little weir on the river, then emerge into the pretty village of Middleton One Row. Refreshments can be had here at the Devenport Hotel, if it’s open.
Onwards through a lovely wooded area, to the beautifully kept village of Neasham before arriving in Hurworth and the end of our journey. The only public house open on Monday afternoon was the Bay Horse - where we had the obligatory drink together before our lift arrived to get us back to Yarm.
