I walked from Hurworth and it was a very pleasant route - except for the building site for the housing estate....

One last obstacle: on crossing the Tees bridge, with my destination Hurworth in sight, I found the gate padlocked. Update: I returned to the Tees bridge at Hurworth again this morning, and found the gate open....

When you reach the A66 there is a new housing development being built on the Darlington side and at present the footpath is just outside of the development boundary but there are plans for more houses yet which may disrupt the path....

From here the pathway follows the river to Middleton One Row, a very pretty village with a hotel and extensive village green. The only road walking follows a fairly quiet road into Neasham for about a quarter of a mile or so and then follows the Tees Way road along a broad footpath into Hurworth....

A really well signposted walk and good well set paths along tracks, through woodland and over fields linking Yarm to Hurworth on Tees, for most part hugging the beautiful River Tees. Only one part of the walk ( just after Neasham Grange Farm and before we walked past the beautiful red brick dovecote building on the outskirts of Middleton One Row) was the path quite overgrown with nettles. After passing the dovecote you walk past a lovely little weir on the river, then emerge into the pretty village of Middleton One Row....

This was a good route for me as a whole, though I'm assuming the closure mentioned by the previous reviewer is still in place....

Summary: a mainly rural route that threads a neat path into Darlington town centre avoiding most of the main roads. I walked this route south to north and so started in the pretty village of Hurworth on Tees. I arrived in the village on another Slow Ways route, but there are regular buses from Darlington if you plan to travel on public transport. Although close to Darlington town centre, Geneva Wood nature reserve is a peaceful haven and has an easy follow footpath (pic 7). Having a route with so little road walking that get's to the town centre makes this a good choice of paths...

More than half of this route is on road, with two short sections being busy local main roads. The path closure and a route with a mile less road would be possible by going Danby Wiske to Birkby and then on to White House between Great Smeaton and East Crowton. On balance this route, once the path is officially reopened, is a good compromise of directness versus off road. The B6271 was pretty busy but again much of the route has grass verges that can be safely walk on (pic 5). The route from the village is due north on a road signposted to Danby Wiske. Leaving the village to north, the road turns in to farm track. The path branches off just before you get to North Farm. The route then crosses field after field - sometimes following a farm track (pic 9), other times hacking through 4ft high grass or finding overgrown styles (pic 10). Didn't see any shops on the route through the village, but Google says there is a shop, post office and pub off to the left when the route turns right....

A new stile had barbed wire which could easily catch you as you climb over. However, given the current building works (near Geneva Woods), the broken stiles & barbed wire, I could not recommend as a slow ways at this time....
