Surveys
We are working to build-up a picture of what routes look like. To do that we are asking volunteers to survey routes so that we can communicate features, obstacles and challenges that may make a route desirable or not.
Slow Ways surveyors are asked to complete some basic online training, but they are not vetted. If you are dependent on the survey information being correct in order to complete a route, we recommend that you think critically about the information provided. You may also wish to wait until more than one survey has been completed.
Help people know more about this route by volunteering to submit a survey.

21 Aug 2024I walked this a few weeks ago. Nothing really to add to the previous reviews - a pleasant and easy way to get between Hungerford and Newbury.

27 Apr 2022This is a great Slow Way route and maybe the very best way to travel between Hungerford and Newbury. Really enjoyed it.. and the ultra easy navigation made the conversation with my walking partner all the richer.

05 Nov 2021Starting from the bus station in Newbury the route follows the Kennet Canal towpath all the way to Hungerford Railway Station. This leads to it being it is both very direct and flat. The path surface is mainly paved or gravelled with a few gates but would be suitable for wheels. There are two sections of about a mile in length each where the paving gives way to grass and these were muddy after recent rain.

26 Oct 2021Love walk along the Kennet & Avon canal from Hungerford to Newbury. Possible to break the route at Kintbury, where there are various shops & pubs.

28 Aug 2021Hungerford to Newbury (Hunnew 1) review.
A pleasant walk alongside the Kennet & Avon Canal.
The route starts at Hungerford (Photo 1), the point at which the river Kennet first meets the canal.
Look out for the stonework deeply marked by ropes on a bridge west of Kintbury (Photo 2). Kintbury makes a convenient break point with a choice of amenities.
The route continues towards Newbury (Photo 3), leaving the canal at the historic Weavers’ Cottages (Photo 4).

29 Jun 2021A straightforward to navigate route along the Kennet & Avon canal towpath which also accommodates National Cycle Network Route 4 towards Newbury.
Excluding the start and arrival in Newbury, the route is traffic-free with just 3 country roads to cross.
Approx 5k after Hungerford is the village of Kintbury which has public toilets right by the canal, plus a couple of pubs and a shop within a short walk. The village has railway and bus connections too.
The path is generally good for walking. It narrows in places when the vegetation is fully grown and I know from experience there are a few places where it can get muddy and slippery in winter.
There are several benches along the route, typically located near the bridges and locks, perfect for taking a break!.
