Help connect Hungerford

Many Slow Ways have several route options. Some will be better than others, or good for different reasons.

Our goal is for each Slow Way to have at least one route that is verified and surveyed. To be verified – and get its snail badge – a route needs at least three positive reviews.

Give a hike and help get a for every one of Hungerford’s Slow Ways.

Latest Updates

This is a super easy canal towpath route, and even better it has railway stations at either end, so excellent candidate for a #RailWalk. Mostly the towpath was dry and firm underfoot, (photo 5 is typical) but following such a wet winter its not surprising that there was some mud around....

The hardest part underfoot was the descent from Ham Hill where the path jumps over a broken stile and into the long grass and nettles, with a final duck under a fallen tree required to reach a second stile and some steps down to the road....

Walk this route

An attractive route south across the North Wessex Downs AONB; that ascends from Hungerford on the River Dun to the village of Vernham Dean. From the top (Photo 7), there are lanes and footpaths on the direct walk into Vernham Dean (Photo 8)....

A relaxing Slow Way across the North Wessex Downs: first south along a byway through the downs, and then east following the River Kennet to the Kennet & Avon Canal at Hungerford. The Slow Way crosses the River Kennet and then turns eastwards (Photo 3)....

Walk this route

An excellent Slow Way that mostly follows the River Kennet eastwards to where it meets the Kennet & Avon Canal at Hungerford. The route then crosses over to the south bank of the Kennet. A footpath crosses Freeman’s Marsh, an area of wetland (Photo 7), to reach the Kennet & Avon Canal....

This is a lovely Slow Way that's easy to follow - and I even saw some large trout in the River Kennet. I'm going to come back to share some photos and a longer review... but wanted to get this new route posted so we can get it verified!...

This is a great Slow Way route and maybe the very best way to travel between Hungerford and Newbury. Really enjoyed it.. and the ultra easy navigation made the conversation with my walking partner all the richer....

Just north of Ramsbury, at Love's Farm on Love's Lane the land owner had added a series of electric fences over the right of way. but I'll be very pleased to walk this route (minus the electric fences) any time!...

Starting in Aldbourne, the route initially climbs out of the village on the road to a junction of a byway and footpath which head in the same direction (Photo 1). The footpath meets the byway and heads downhill through the woods eventually turning into the no-through road of Loves Lane (Photo 3). Leaving the road, a footpath (narrow in places – Photo 8) climbs up through the woods before emerging on a hill overlooking Hungerford (Photo 9)....

Starting from the bus station in Newbury the route follows the Kennet Canal towpath all the way to Hungerford Railway Station. This leads to it being it is both very direct and flat. The path surface is mainly paved or gravelled with a few gates but would be suitable for wheels....

This section could easily and more safely be bypassed by taking the footpath to the south of the village just on the other side of the River Kennet which runs alongside the village. Just beyond Axford the Kennet valley bottom is crossed by footbridges and in one place a boardwalk which was not level and quite twisted (see photo). Just above Chilton Foliat the footpath there is a steep, and in parts muddy ascent over the top of the hill before descending into Hungerford...

A straightforward to navigate route along the Kennet & Avon canal towpath which also accommodates National Cycle Network Route 4 towards Newbury....

Walk this route

Leaving Hungerford we were unable to walk across the fields joining Priory Road to Sanham Green Road as a new housing estate is currently under construction. Leaving Sanham Green Rd the footpath through the woods to Mount Prosperous was slightly boggy and overgrown in places and in winter we know that it can get very wet with standing water and thick mud. From Ham to the base of Ham Hill is easy walking on a quiet country road....
