Surveys

We are working to build-up a picture of what routes look like. To do that we are asking volunteers to survey routes so that we can communicate features, obstacles and challenges that may make a route desirable or not.

Slow Ways surveyors are asked to complete some basic online training, but they are not vetted. If you are dependent on the survey information being correct in order to complete a route, we recommend that you think critically about the information provided. You may also wish to wait until more than one survey has been completed.

Help people know more about this route by volunteering to submit a survey.

A lovely station to station walk.

With the exception of the start and end points and a handful of farmers access tracks, this route is entirely off-road, taking advantage of an extensive public rights of way network.

Starting at Hindley, we follow a cobbled street, gravel footpath and climb a flight of steps before crossing the first of several stiles enroute and following a series of farmers tracks.

There appears to have been an effort made to discourage the public from using the right of way at the southern end of Jack's Lane (SD6353 3635), with all signage, including way markers along the route, removed and lying in hedges. That said, despite multiple "private land" sign, it remains accessible to walkers throughout and I had no issues whilst using it.

The remainder of the route consists of agricultural land, golf courses (the western side of Westhoughton appears to be made up of approximately 95% golf course) and wooded areas, before joining the road network around Wingate industrial estate.

This is a foot only route, which is unfortunately not accessible to wheels due to stiles, steps and rough surfaces. It was a warm day when we walked it, but mud was still prevelent in some areas.

Overall, a nice walk, linking Hindley with Westhoughton over the shortest available distance.
