03 Jun 2023 (edited 29 Jan 2024)I walked this route over 2 days, walking Hemyock to Ilminster2 the first day, which is the same as this route up to Bishopswood. I then returned to Bishopswood the 2nd day and walked to Chard.
From Hemyock the route crosses farmland using footpaths and quiet lanes. I had some trouble with cows, poor signage and one very short but very overgrown section of footpath. The views however make for decent compensation.
From Oatens Farm to Combe St Nicholas the route is entirely on quiet hedgerow lined lanes. At times the views open up, and you also get to visit the villages of Churchinford, Bishopswood as well as Combe St Nicholas all 3 of which have pubs to break up the journey. Although I found this section very long, it does mean it would be good winter walking.
From Combe St Nicholas the route is more varied using tracks, footpaths and very narrow quiet lanes. It's also quite hilly all the way to Chard, but this does mean that you get some great views.
If you want to break the walk up as I did, you
can use the Chard-Taunton bus service stopping at Buckland St Mary, then with a short walk to Bishopswood.
