Surveys
We are working to build-up a picture of what routes look like. To do that we are asking volunteers to survey routes so that we can communicate features, obstacles and challenges that may make a route desirable or not.
Slow Ways surveyors are asked to complete some basic online training, but they are not vetted. If you are dependent on the survey information being correct in order to complete a route, we recommend that you think critically about the information provided. You may also wish to wait until more than one survey has been completed.
Help people know more about this route by volunteering to submit a survey.

07 Apr 2023This is a pleasant route with lovely views and some interesting local villages and history to explore, should you have the time. The route is well signed and navigation is relatively straightforward. Some sections are often wet/muddy so suitable footwear is recommended. From Hovingham the route heads northwest to Stonegrave through flat agricultural land. Stonegrave Minister (757 AD) is on the route and worth a visit (open weekends and occasionally weekdays in the summer). Be careful crossing the B1257 in Stonegrave as sight-lines are tricky. As you head up Caulkleys Bank there are stunning views north (the the moors) and south. The route drops then down to Nunnington (Nunnington Hall is a National Trust property and the Old Yard Coffee Shop is a lovely place for refreshments). You encounter the River Rye for the first time at Nunnington before heading north along Canada Lane towards Harome. Be careful no to miss the path across the field at 662801 or you will have to retrace your steps from Low Woods farm. The footbridge at 652814 crosses the River Riccal and leads you to the east end of Harome, a beautiful village with two highly rated inns. There is now a short section on the road (unavoidable) after Harome. The road isn't busy but nevertheless you should remain vigilant as vehicles are coming down a gentle hill towards you and are often moving (too?) fast. Leave the road at 633827, following the field edge towards a dismantled railway line. You can then follow the footpath across the fields towards Helmsley or cut under the railway bridge (631826) and follow the path on the north bank of the River Rye. This option adds approximately 500m to the Slow Ways route. The route follows the dismantled railway along filed edges before joining a farm track and then branching north at Spittle Beck (wet and muddy!). Alternatively, stay on the farm lane and enter Helmsley via Sawmill Lane and Ryegate. The alternative route along the bank of the River Rye also merges into Sawmill Lane.
Helmsley is a busy market town (market day on Friday) with a plenty of cafes, restaurants, shops, pubs, and a really good micro-brewery. Helmsley Castle, Duncombe Park and the Walled Garden are three (of many) interesting local attractions. The Cleveland Way and the Tabular Hills Walk (both long-distance paths) start in Helmsley.
