Surveys
We are working to build-up a picture of what routes look like. To do that we are asking volunteers to survey routes so that we can communicate features, obstacles and challenges that may make a route desirable or not.
Slow Ways surveyors are asked to complete some basic online training, but they are not vetted. If you are dependent on the survey information being correct in order to complete a route, we recommend that you think critically about the information provided. You may also wish to wait until more than one survey has been completed.

21 Apr 2025I plotted this route from my desktop, during a set of new routes being added for new Slow Ways places. The road from Airton to Otterburn had more traffic than I had expected (via Google Street View). I guess the fact that it was late afternoon on a sunny Easter Sunday didn’t help! There was no verge but at least the drivers were fairly slow and careful, although I did have to cross a few times to stay on the outside of bends. It was good to reach Otterburn though.
The start of the footpath from Dacre Lane was not at all clear, although there were some signs of use, but no signposts. Crossing the wall into the first field was quite easy, but only looked partly like a stile!
The field crossings after this were more convincing, with ladder stiles and standard wooden stiles. From Goal to Snailshaw (great names!) there was a tarmacked farm track, with grass at the side for the sheep fields. There were several cattle grids.
The last road section didn’t seem quite as busy. I would recommend HelAir Two over this route though.
