Description
This is an alternative route that better meets the Slow Ways methodology. It predominantly follows a shared use off-road cycle path (part of the national cycle network route 66) along with sections of canal towpath and quiet roads.
The route is step-free with the only potential problems being a short section in Mytholmroyd where there are narrow pavements on a more busy road

Surveys
We are working to build-up a picture of what routes look like. To do that we are asking volunteers to survey routes so that we can communicate features, obstacles and challenges that may make a route desirable or not.
Slow Ways surveyors are asked to complete some basic online training, but they are not vetted. If you are dependent on the survey information being correct in order to complete a route, we recommend that you think critically about the information provided. You may also wish to wait until more than one survey has been completed.

11 Aug 2024This is a gorgeous experience, largely following the waterway, with divergences to take bridle paths and other public footways. Some of these are overgrown due to lack of use, but the slow ways project may well be addressing this. Apart from a few slight inclines, it is very manageable for any walker being largely flat. The impression is that this would have been a regular route for local people connected by family or cultural matters between the two areas of habitation, and that we were treading in the footsteps of may other generations of walkers.

30 Jul 2024 (edited 11 Aug 2024)Walked Sowerby-Hebden. The route follows the canal and then woodland alongside the train track for much of the way so it’s easy to follow which makes it good for thought and conversation. A relaxing rather than a thrilling walk.
There’s one section through a small industrial estate.
There are a couple of tricksy points - getting onto the canal paths and getting onto the train track path (see photos).
Mytholmroyd is lovely and has a really good Indian takeaway by the station! (We came back here to stay at a friend’s.)
Hebden is also a great place to arrive - we arrived in the middle of Pride!
If anyone knows what the tunnel going into the ground is (see photo), please leave a comment!.

28 Jul 2024Beautiful broad tow path of the Rochdale canal makes this. An interesting walk, very green and leafy, sometimes by water, sometimes by railway. Definitely recommend it as a walk. Pretty accurate, a bit of hedging bets and going back on ourselves to catch the path but can generally orientate according to rail or canal or main road. Coming into Hebden there was a fair, made me think of fairs of the past nestled by the hills.

08 Jul 2023This is an ideal Slow Way route following national cycle route 66 from Hebden Bridge to Sowerby Bridge. Walked on a hot sunny afternoon, much of the route was along pleasantly shaded paths next to the railway. This route is flat, and step free. It would not be a problem with a pushchair and is potentially wheelchair accessible.
