Surveys
We are working to build-up a picture of what routes look like. To do that we are asking volunteers to survey routes so that we can communicate features, obstacles and challenges that may make a route desirable or not.
Slow Ways surveyors are asked to complete some basic online training, but they are not vetted. If you are dependent on the survey information being correct in order to complete a route, we recommend that you think critically about the information provided. You may also wish to wait until more than one survey has been completed.
Help people know more about this route by volunteering to submit a survey.

18 Jun 2023As has been noticed, this route is now able to be fully completed as the closed bridleway has been reopened. The sections on the nutbrook trail and through Shipley country park are nice and easy, though there are other sections, especially in the Manor floods nature reserve which are very overgrown and it's easy to lose your way. This is nice as a walk to do, but perhaps not ideal as a slow way.

20 Aug 2022 (edited 01 Sep 2022)I attempted to walk this route from Ilkeston to Heanor, but had the same problems that Stephen reported, i.e. that the Nutbrook Trail is currently closed due to the building work on the old American Adventure site, so the only viable alternatives are diverting around the east side of the lake (as in Heailk 2) or a longer detour using the bridleway from Lodge Farm to Mapperley, continuing to the country park via Mapperley Wood. The closed section is protected by a strong high metal fence, which had a notice on it saying that the closure was until August 1 2022 (so 19 days before my walk!). See the attached pictures. I chose to continue using Heailk 2.
I have done the closed section as recently as 2021, and it is a good route, so I won't flag this one because in theory the path closure is temporary. I will reassess the rating once I know that it is open again, and once it is I would be happy to recommend most of it.
The only concern about the parts of the route I have done is the route through Manor Floods nature reserve - the path along the line of the old railway is too overgrown to be walked comfortably and I used a slightly different route using the next path to the west and a bit more of the Nutbrook trail.

20 Oct 2022The public bridleways number 9 & 43 at Shipley remain under temporary closure. Please accept my apologies for the absence of a current notification regarding this on our website.
The current temporary closure of the bridleways will unfortunately remain in force until 31st January 2023. Notices explaining this are to be displayed in affected areas very soon. Following an inspection in October 2022, it was decided that the pumping machines need to remain on site to repair and maintain the reservoir. This is why the bridleways are temporarily inaccessible.

09 Jun 2023Thanks Vicky, that is useful to know. I will thing about creating and test walking a new version that uses most of this route but sticks to better paths at the Ilkeston end. The route through Manor Floods could easily be improved.

31 Jan 2022The section south of Shipley Lake is closed (January 2022) owing to building work on the former American Adventure site.

08 Mar 2022There are no paths in Shipley officially closed (March 2022) on the DCC register see

20 Aug 2022I can confirm that the direct Nutbrook Trail route is still closed as of Aug 20 2022, and the closed section is protected by a high metal fence - the notice on the fence says the closure is until 1 Aug 2022 but this is clearly over-optimistic since that was now 19 days ago. There is a large (~1metre diameter) pipeline across the path behind the fence. Parts of the bridleway round the east side of the lake are also behind the fence so in a couple of places HEAILK 2 is a little inaccurate but not enough to cause any difficulty following it.
