Help connect Heanor

Many Slow Ways have several route options. Some will be better than others, or good for different reasons.

Our goal is for each Slow Way to have at least one route that is verified and surveyed. To be verified – and get its snail badge – a route needs at least three positive reviews.

Give a hike and help get a for every one of Heanor’s Slow Ways.

A short field path takes us to a farm lane, beyond which the field path is a little indistinct in places, and has stiles. North of Collins Park Farm I tried to use the shortcut path left, and one hedge gap was very overgrown with holly and bramble shoots, and might have been impassable in summer - I think most walkers take the slightly longer bypassing line, and the GPX does not make this clear. Having crossed the main road in Stanley Common we turn left down the Ropewalk - don't miss the path that branches right earlier than one might expect if following the OS map....

The sections on the nutbrook trail and through Shipley country park are nice and easy, though there are other sections, especially in the Manor floods nature reserve which are very overgrown and it's easy to lose your way. This is nice as a walk to do, but perhaps not ideal as a slow way...

It had been dry for about a month until the couple of days before, even so many of the field paths (and particularly gateways) were wet and muddy. I would agree with previous reviewers about the state of the paths in places and the way in which the actual paths are not where the 1:25k map shows them, especially across the land restored after opencast....

Leaving the meeting point in Heanor market place, we head west along Market Street then left onto Ray Street, which leads us to Derby Road, where it is best to turn left down and cross using the pelican crossing by the Baptist Church. Here we turn left, then right in front of the Bulls Head (which is now open again), crossing more muddy fields and even muddier wooded sections to emerge on the fields above the Denby factory, then past Smithy Houses to emerge on Ryknield Hill by the Derby Road junction. We turn left on a track that leads back up the hill and becomes a field path that eventually reaches a better path that goes right down the hill....

Our road uses an alleyway to reach Knapp Avenue, and we turn left down Church Street, and cross the by-pass on the road bridge. The path right leads is through a park to emerge on Ilkeston Road, which we cross and turn right, turning left along Church Street to the meeting point in the market place....

Beautiful and direct route with some great views and a range of terrains. Very wet and muddy this time of year, and not all paths through fields are immediately clear. Lots of stiles so not accessible for wheelchairs....

After crossing Lime Lane the route uses footpaths across the fields to Stanley Common. Leaving Stanley Common it uses more cross-country footpaths across the ridge before reaching tarmac at Park Hall Lane....

This route has the potential to be a Slow Way open to all users but it does need a bit of attention to achieve that. The route leaves the level surface of the cycle route to cross more scrubby ground which I felt spoilt the ease of walking this part of the route. The route to the east side of Shipley Lake is well used and good, having been the access road to the large tarmac area once used as the car park for American Adventure....

Starting from the square in Heanor, we walk down Market Street, and turn left down Derby Road, crossing at the pelican crossing. We continue a little further and turn right down Nook End Road and Kingsway, then right into Park Street and along the left edge of the Park. At Loscoe Denby Lane we go slightly right and then left along Grammer Street, and follow the path straight on at the end of the street to Codnor Denby Lane, where we turn right (pavement on the right) until we reach the signposted path left, following the signs around the house and then diagonally across the field to a track where we turn right....

After 1.8 miles, at the entrance to Lakeside Business Centre, the Nutbrook trail heads south (right) [but this section is closed] and I continued along the lane following the boundary fence of the Shipley Lake building development. When the new access road is reached, turn right to follow it south-west around the boundary fence to eventually reach the Nutbrook Cafe (3 miles from the start). 3.5 miles from the start the Nutbrook trail takes a sharp right turn at a footpath sign....

The exit from Heanor is direct and enters Shipley Country Park from the urban area via Sustrans route 67. The correct path has a metal gate but no signage except a notice from the Woodland Trust wrongly stating 'No Public Access' this is very misleading as it's a public footpath so ignore the sign if it's still present. This path takes you across pleasant field to Mapperley Park then a short section of quiet road and right onto another unsigned path which eventually crosses a private airfield, signs offer a warning. Approaching the A608 road crossing the plotting should again be disregarded, Take the climbing surfaced path right. Next a visually pleasant path if you ignore the noise of the adjacent busy but invisible road. It's a direct route between the Derby and Heanor and it's also a very enjoyable leisure walk....

I walked this route Heanor to Belper and found it most enjoyable through green countryside with some good views mostly grass fields so some livestock and stiles. Entering the field is entering another world good grass and distant views, a family were attempting to fly a kite as I passed. It's a bit depressing to imagine these fields are the next to accommodate houses, still enjoy them while we can. A wonderful view over the sprawling houses of Belper then through fields that again appear to be just waiting for the developer to move in....
