23 Mar 2026I walked this on a spring morning in March. I walked from Haverhill to Halstead on a dry day after a period of dry weather.
The route took you down the A1124 for a good distance. I did not fancy this as looking on Google maps I could see no pavement. Also even if there were a pavement walking on an A road is not much fun.
For most of the route from Haverhill you are in farmland, not surprising in East Anglia. Under foot was mainly clay that had set solid with the dry weather. Quite a few of the tracks were used by tractors and their tyre tracks had set solid and you had to be careful using them.
As I said I took a different route out of Sible Hedingham. I took a footpath heading towards Hull's Mill Farm from there headed to Dog House Grove passing by Wallace Plantation. From there I went down to Doe's Corner and rejoin the original route. This section proved to be the most variable. It still passed through farmland but there were woods and other variations.
