05 Feb 2023I walked this from Hatfield to Newgate Street. The first section is near identical to Hather Three, but a bit more tarmac and a bit less mud. I probably prefer Hather Three's version, but variety is good.
Most of this route is on quiet tarmac or very wide byways/bridleways that are quite active from horses, motorbikes, walkers and mountain bikers. Because of this, the mud can get pretty chopped up in places. While a few short sections are footpaths only, cyclists shouldn't have any problems finding detours around. Generally navigation is easy, presuming you pay attention (whoops).

30 Jul 2022I walked from Newgate Street to Hatfield.
I'd walked from Hertford, as getting to Newgate Street by public transport is difficult, a good place to walk through. But fortified by a good lunch from the cafe next to the Pub I walked along a residential road that morphed into a farm track alongside open fields. There a short section walking on a quiet road before turning onto a wooded path, Hornbeam Lane. The path turns into a track, and past a stud farm, into a paved road. Turning down towards Wildhill Brook the path becomes uneven with fallen trees and uneven rooty ground, this will be muddy in wet weather. The Brook still had a trickle of water in it, this July being the driest in 111 years. Past The Candlestick pub there is a sort walk along a road to the Hatfield Estate. The sign says 'please shut the gate', but it is locked shut, there is a stile and a map making sure you stay on the path, a nice welcome by Lord Salisbury. A path takes you across a field, cracked in the heat, then along farm tracks past fields with glimpses of the River Lee. Hatfield Park is fenced off so the next section goes around it along the A414 main road shared with cycles. Past Watermill museum, set away from the main road, a short respite before crossing roads and continuing alongside a busy road. A crossing takes you along a cycle path under a bridge towards the station.
In spite of the last roadside section this is a beautiful and varied walk.
Uneven underfoot in places and with stiles, not for wheels. Likely to be muddy in winter.

19 Aug 2021Lovely rural route but spoilt by the first mile or so out of Hatfield which is alongside a really noisy dual carriageway. I'm guessing there's no other choice as there is no free access through the Hatfield Estate?.
