Surveys

We are working to build-up a picture of what routes look like. To do that we are asking volunteers to survey routes so that we can communicate features, obstacles and challenges that may make a route desirable or not.

Slow Ways surveyors are asked to complete some basic online training, but they are not vetted. If you are dependent on the survey information being correct in order to complete a route, we recommend that you think critically about the information provided. You may also wish to wait until more than one survey has been completed.

I started at Motherwell train station, walked over the bridge across the railway (few stairs to climb to walk over the bridge), then its downhill along Ladywell Road in Motherwell, through a small housing estate, come to a wooded area, followed a path which leads you to Strathclyde park, lovely views, sun shining on the lake, easy pathway to walk round, go on through an underpass, then up through the Furlough estate (slightly steep hill) crossed over road round past County Buildings in Hamilton, passed a well known ice cream parlour Equis, pit stop for ice cream then onto Hamilton West train station. Lovely leisurely walk, would definitely recommend it as it's not too far a distance and the views were worth it. The route was safe, no access issues apart from stairs up to the bridge.

Walked Motherwell train station (you walk over the bridge to start which is behind the station) to Hamilton West.

It was a nice walk, with few points of interest, around the Strathclyde Country Park and also at Hamilton Memorial. There is a steep hill in Hamilton which could prove tricky , but if you walk nice and slow its very do-able. There is one dark underpath that i wouldn't want to do on my own.
We found the walking app Komoot tricky as it didnt ask us to reverse the route until we were nearly done! So it was confusing at times.
At the end of the route we recommend having a lovely ice cream from Equi's.

Walked this route from Motherwell to Hamilton. Bit of a slow start as couldn't get the app to reverse the route (until we nearly completed the walk!) Was a pleasant, fairly easy walk. Starts of through streets then a nice walk around part of Strathclyde park before finishing up at Hamilton West train station (getting a well deserved ice cream from equies).

I walked this route from Motherwell to Hamilton. I started from Motherwell train station and after crossing a bridge across the railway line it was a straight road down Ladywell road which was nice enough and not too busy before cutting through a residential area before taking you through a path into a wooded area. This brings you out at Strathclyde Park and the route then takes you round the edge of the loch which was lovely. Taking a left at the piper alpha memorial you cross the Clyde and then go through an underpass where you walk through the park past the Hamilton Mausoleum. It’s a straight walk up the hill from there into Hamilton and finishing at Hamilton West railway station. It very straightforward pleasant walk with good paths or pavement all the way and a nice middle section through the park and around the loch.

Review of SlowWays Route Hammot one (Hamilton to Motherwell)
I reviewed this route over two dates for convenience. However it is a short route which presents no particular problems. The first section is mostly along pavements (although there is a short footpath just opposite Hamilton West Railway Station). Eventually, after crossing the busy Bothwell Road via the pedestrian crossing, the route enters much quieter streets and becomes much more pleasant. There is a long downhill section which eventually leads to Hamilton Mausoleum. The route then crosses Hamilton Palace Grounds and enters an underpass (under the M74) before crossing a footbridge and arriving in Strathclyde Park. Crossing Strathclyde Park is very simple as there is an excellent path network and the route specifically identified is one of several that could be taken. It eventually leads to Ladywell Road via the edge of the loch, some short wooded sections and the residential Brogan Crescent. I personally would opt to leave the lochside a little earlier than recommended (at NS73645655) and take the path (which starts at NS73785663) up to Strathclyde Road, then make my way to Ladywell Road along the pavements rather than through the woods. Ladywell Road is a long, uphill and not-very-interesting residential street but it is mostly quiet and there are crossing points at the busier intersections. Eventually a short length of footpath leads to a footbridge over the railway and the end of the route at Motherwell Railway Station. Please note that there are steep steps up to and down from the footbridge. If these are a barrier, it is possible to get to the railway station by turning right at the top of Ladyburn Road and following High Road, Hamilton Road and Muir Street (keeping left at each junction). This is a convenient and direct route between Hamilton and Motherwell which avoids going anywhere near the busy A723 which is the main route for motor traffic. It is scenic in places and passes several interesting landmarks but it also has some quite long sections on fairly dull pavements.
