Surveys

We are working to build-up a picture of what routes look like. To do that we are asking volunteers to survey routes so that we can communicate features, obstacles and challenges that may make a route desirable or not.

Slow Ways surveyors are asked to complete some basic online training, but they are not vetted. If you are dependent on the survey information being correct in order to complete a route, we recommend that you think critically about the information provided. You may also wish to wait until more than one survey has been completed.

Help people know more about this route by volunteering to submit a survey.

05 Feb 2024 Winter

I walk sections of this route regularly with my dog. The main negative point first. It's a rural route which has uneven sections across fields and can be very muddy in places. It's not necessarily a great walk in winter or after long periods of rain.

It is a good walk in drier months though. It's got bluebell woods, a couple of nature reserves, a stretch alongside a river and a good chance of seeing wildlife.

It's not difficult to follow the route which is mostly level, has long stretches on well made tracks and is stile free. There are one or two gates, but they are intended to stop vehicle access and pedestrians can just walk around them.

The starting point is by a pub/Nepalese restaurant in Grateley. Very welcoming last time I went. Dog friendly. Check opening hours if you're looking for food or drink as there probably isn't anywhere else to get either in Grateley.

It's about 4 miles to Abbotts Ann and more than 90% is on footpath or farm track with a brief stretch on a quiet country road. There are lots of footpath markers and it's easy to follow the correct route with a map.

Abbotts Ann has a couple of pubs and a village shop. Most of this route through the village is on pavement or footpath. There's a short section (200 yards or so) on the road, but it's a wide road and visibility is good.

At the A343 turn left towards Andover. After about 50 yards the route continues on the other side of the road and runs behind houses for about 3/4 of a mile to Upper Clatford. There are options for detours through Anna Valley (small farm shop) or Bury Hill Meadows Nature Reserve before arriving at the junction of Red Rice Road and Sam Whites Hill. From here, follow the pavement round the corner. There's another pub 100 yards further on, but the route heads down Watery Lane.

Just beyond the houses, the route heads into the trees. From here you could follow the path directly into the middle of Andover along a former railway line, but beyond the A303 the route heads into Rooksbury Mill nature reserve and alongside the river Anton.
