31 Aug 2023Most of this route was gorgeous, walking along an off-road promenade along the beautiful Clyde Estuary. However there were parts where it was necessary to walk along the pavement of the main road. Some of these are due to exclusive housing and boat clubs. At the Gourock end, I'd love to have walked along the Clyde side of the station and the railway. I could see it marked on the OS map, within the cycling layer, as a cycle track – I need to investigate this further.
There was a staircase over railway, but there was also an easy road alternative just beyond. As I walked along the coast I had views across to Helensburgh and sunken submarine. In fact all the coastal views were wonderful, especially while the sun was out.
The section past Clydeport Container Terminal was interesting rather than picturesque! It was quite a hive of activity.
A tiny bit of the route after this was now blocked by a locked gate. This wasn't really a problem because the open alternative around the new Greenock Ocean Terminal building was so close by that it was unmissable. I think this new building (for the cruise ships I think) has sprung up since the route was plotted and since the current (as at 2023) mapping was last updated.
The rain swept in just as I was reaching the Greenock meeting point.

02 Mar 2023Review of Gougre one (Gourock to Greenock)
I walked this route in reverse (i.e. from Greenock to Gourock) in combination with the adjoining route (Grepor one: Greenock to Port Glasgow). Like that route, it follows a section of the Clyde Coastal Path, staying close to the shore except for a section where it passes a container terminal and again when it passes the former Fort Matilda site (now houses) and Battery Park. Also, as Gourock Railway Station is approached, the route uses a footbridge to cross over the railway to finish at the front of the station. This is an easy route largely along a dedicated footpath (including the excellent esplanade), only slightly spoiled by the need to divert inland to bypass the obstacles mentioned. The steep steps of the footbridge may present a barrier to some travellers but there is an easy, local work-around via Chalmers Street. A lovely route through a chain of interesting communities with interesting buildings, numerous attractions and stunning views.
