Surveys

We are working to build-up a picture of what routes look like. To do that we are asking volunteers to survey routes so that we can communicate features, obstacles and challenges that may make a route desirable or not.

Slow Ways surveyors are asked to complete some basic online training, but they are not vetted. If you are dependent on the survey information being correct in order to complete a route, we recommend that you think critically about the information provided. You may also wish to wait until more than one survey has been completed.

Help people know more about this route by volunteering to submit a survey.

28 Apr 2022 Spring

I started this walk from the Blindley Heath end.
I wish I had taken an OS map with me as I found using just the gpx on my phone hard work.
The route starts on the very busy A22 which only has pavement on one side and no pedestrian priority crossing points here so you have to wait for a gap in the traffic and make use of a central island.
Turning off the main road you go down the side of a warehouse building into what looks like a dead end - if I hadn't met someone who confirmed there was a footpath I would have assumed that it didn't exist. As it is, it is hard to follow and has at one point a closed gate overgrown with bushes which I had to climb over. I made it as far as Upper Barn Farm before I lost the path completely and made a detour to the northwest along the farm lane and then back southwest along Byers Lane (which has no verges - not much traffic but what there is drives fast).
Things get better along Whitewwood Lane and once you turn off by the Jolly Farmer pub everything is fine.
From here pretty much the whole route is along bridleways and small lanes. It had been dry for 3 weeks when I did the route but there were signs that after wet weather some parts could be extremely muddy.
I'm not sure why the route starts where it does which is about half way between Godstone and Lingfield rail stations. It is served by an hourly bus service (409 to/from Caterham) At the Godstone end of the route there seemed to be be places to get food or eat and bus routes to Caterham and Redhill.
So on the whole I would say 95% great and 5% dreadful.

I was going to test a tweaked version of GodBli this weekend but my plans changed at the last minute so I've uploaded it instead. Hopefully it fixes your "dreadful" section.
