14 Jun 2023Urban paths and in the countryside old hedged lanes so no cattle seen. Near Glapwell the path is through cropped fields. No services on route and no difficult road crossings.
I left Shirebrook and found the wide path through 1960s housing a good start. I missed the footpath from the ORPA (Other Route with Public Access) but no worries I found a well walked link to correct this error. I then followed the excellent tarmac path on the edge of the new houses which avoids the pavement walk.
Back on the plotted route and into countryside the narrow walked path in June was easy to locate but tall side vegetation had flopped so vigilance was needed to avoid nettles. The old lanes named Green, Balkham and Water are all traffic free but retain their original hedged width although the walked or riden path is narrow. The section of Water Lane, as the names suggests, is pleasant alongside the clear tiny stream which we cross on stepping blocks.
Stoney Houghton has nothing to offer except a change of scene before the final field paths which in part had been mown but the tall Oil Seed had here flopped and blocked the path. A functional walk but with little of interest along the way. Remarkable how two months had made such a difference to the earlier review.

05 Apr 2023 (edited 06 Apr 2023)Walked from Shirebrook to Glapwell. An easy and pleasant route, though the route out of Shirebrook could be shortened and simplified a little by using more of the permissive paths.
From Shirebrook, we head south then follow the B6031 west to a footpath which goes through a new housing estate to Long Lane, which we follow west to its end and continue on a surfaced path, taking the left fork up the hill where it splits. We cross the oddly named Leen Valley Drive and turn left at Stinting Lane (stay on the near/east pavement). At Bracken Lane we head straight on on another surfaced path. I missed the right turn by the new houses, but found a well trodden alternative through the field a little further on. Another surfaced path takes us to Meadow Lane.
Here the route follows the road to the roundabout, but it is pleasanter (and slightly shorter) to head straight across and take the diagonal path across Brook Park, to reach Green Lane a little earlier. At Green Lane we head right, crossing the B6047 and continuing to a junction where we head half right down Balkham Lane. Water Lane follows a stream and crosses it twice, first on concrete stepping stones and secondly on a small bridge. We soon reach Stony Houghton, where we head straight on to find the field path that leads to the edge of Glapwell, where we follow pavements to reach the meeting point.

23 Nov 2022I rewalked this route starting at Glapwell. It was November, Following a period of heavy rain. The section from the edge of Glapwell to Stony Houghton is across fields. The surface was soft but not muddy. The Lane through Stony Houghton is quiet. After that is the bridleway known as Water Lane. It was soft but not particularly muddy. From the outskirts of Shirebrook the route is easy to follow through the residential streets. Still enjoyable.

09 May 2022I walked this route from Shirebrook. It starts on quiet residential roads. The navigation is tricky at first, but the route does work - a progression of roads, footpaths and tracks takes you to the outskirts of town. New building has created new paths which form an obvious route. Once the B6407 (Common Lane) is crossed there is a pleasant track all the way to Stony Houghton. A short stretch on roadsides (no pavement, but quiet roads) brings us to a footpath across the fields emerging in Glapwell. A very pleasant route.
