Gilsha two is a lovely country side walk, once one has left Gillingham behind and looks up to the remnants of King's Court. From there it is mainly grassland paths till Motcombe. After Motcombe, more grassland paths. The length of the grass depends on the season. The final section is woodlands, with a steep section at "The Cliff", before entering Shaftesbury. Walking the route in opposite direction offers more leisure.
Re the accuracy of the GPX-file of this route, when accessed on a smartphone via a GPX viewing app:
The GPX plotting on a map has an accuracy of about 20-30m. Keep that in mind.
1) the Motcombe Meadows: there are no signs of the public footpath that connects the east and the west entrances, amidst an abundance of footpaths. Here is a some additional guidance, first for the east-walkers, then for walking westwards.
Walking east: pass both gates into the meadows and keep the shrubs and bushes at your left hand. After about 500 m there is an opening with a small concrete bridge. Turn left here, cross the bridge and continue straight ahead. After about 100 m the parking lot is at your right hand. Turn right here. A "White Hart Link" sign shows the direction to continue.
Walking west: at the parking lot, go through the gate and turn left; do no go straight ahead. After about 100m there is a small concrete bridge. Turn right after the bridge and keep the shrubs and bushes at your right hand, till you reach the gates at the western exit of the meadows.
2) on leaving "The Cliff" one enters the most northern and most recent extension of Shaftesbury. The route is slightly different from what the GPX viewer showed me. So keep the direction in mind and you'll find your way.
Except these two 'finesses', the route is not a puzzle at all. I spent a very enjoyable Sunday morning.
