Surveys
We are working to build-up a picture of what routes look like. To do that we are asking volunteers to survey routes so that we can communicate features, obstacles and challenges that may make a route desirable or not.
Slow Ways surveyors are asked to complete some basic online training, but they are not vetted. If you are dependent on the survey information being correct in order to complete a route, we recommend that you think critically about the information provided. You may also wish to wait until more than one survey has been completed.

09 Apr 2024Much of this route is along fairly quiet residential streets, in Giffnock, Simshill and Rutherglen. The sections through Linn Park and King's Park are lovely - swathes of daffodils when I did the walk (early April) and lots of bird life. At the start of the stretch through Braidholm Recreation Ground, walk on the path outside the perimeter hedge - I had to retrace my steps when I walked on tge inside! The last section along Kingsbridge Drive is long and straight - for me, the least attractive part of the walk.

04 Apr 2022Review of SlowWays Route Gifrut1 (Giffnock to Rutherglen).
This is a relatively ordinary walk through a mostly urban landscape but is greatly enhanced by two sections through attractive parkland. The route begins at Giffnock Railway Station. After crossing the railway bridge and following some quiet side streets, Braidpark Drive is reached. Almost immediately, the route cuts down a narrow path to the left, through some trees, and runs along behind some garages to reach Heathside Road. This is the only part of the route which requires a little care. Thereafter the route follows a series of residential streets before emerging onto the busy Muirend Road. A right turn at the T-junction leads into the equally busy Clarkston Road which is followed uphill until the entrance to Linn Park is reached on the left. Linn Park is a large area of mostly informal green space in the south side of Glasgow. The route drops down to the river (the White Cart Water), then crosses the popular White Bridge (watch out for Kingfishers) before heading uphill, keeping the golf course on the right. The park is left at Simshill Road for a welcome downhill section. Eventually the route turns left into Carmunnock Road before entering Kings Park at its southwest corner. Kings Park is another large green space with some formal areas but also lots of mature woodland and grassland. There are excellent views over the city to the north. The route drops steeply down to leave the park and cross two main roads and a railway line before heading steeply uphill. It then zigzags and undulates through residential streets before arriving at the junction of Bankhead Road and Mill Street. There is a footbridge up a ramp to the right to help with the road crossing, then all that remains is an easy downhill section to Rutherglen Main Street and the end of the route. All in all, a pleasant, easy to follow and safe route which introduces the traveller to two of Glasgow’s largest and nicest parks.
