15 Aug 2021I walked from Abbeystead to Garstang in mid-August and a lot of the paths were overgrown. Mostly the route follows the Wyre Way which is generally well waymarked, although not for the first mile or so. The route was very quiet and picturesque in the first section as far as the pretty village of Dolphinholme, with nice river views and woodland, although the paths were rough or narrow in places. Several field crossings had no discernible path. At the Wyre Fisheries complex, the path has been diverted slightly but it is clearly signed. I’m not sure that their facilities are available to passing walkers, and I don’t think Dolphinholme has any facilities.
As mentioned by Martinb the footbridge over the M6 has been removed and the path is diverted at Nan’s Nook, or Guys, to go underneath the M6 alongside the River Wyre to the south. I have attached a photo of the public notice which includes a map. This whole section past the fisheries and on to Scorton has the constant drone of the M6 and is quite busy, but to my mind, not particularly attractive, although the woods were nice.
After Cleveley Bridge there is a gravelled road, but this becomes private and the route follows a poorly signed footpath alongside a field, which was very overgrown, and I’m glad I wasn’t wearing shorts! This was rewarded on arriving at the popular and lovely village of Scorton, with toilets, pub, shops, and ice cream parlour.
After the railway bridge there is an excellent new off-road footpath, Scorton Millennium Way, alongside the river, but the route leaves the Wyre Way here to take a short cut across fields, although I would have preferred the Wyre Way route. At Woodacre Hall the route, now back on the Wyre Way, goes through a field, which at the time contained corn taller than a person. Take the second path in, not the first, or you will be battling vegetation. From here on to Garstang the route is clear and well used, although be aware, as warning signs state, that a couple of times a year, after heavy rain, this area is used to store excess river flood water, and a diversion will be needed.

27 Apr 2021Walked on 25/04/21. Great walk. Mostly along River Wyre.
Note a motorway footbridge has been removed and still showing on OS maps - not a problem though as a nearby alternative underpass is available.
Narrow bridges/gates and styles, rough ground in places.
