Help connect Garstang
Many Slow Ways have several route options. Some will be better than others, or good for different reasons.
Our goal is for each Slow Way to have at least one route that is verified and surveyed. To be verified – and get its snail badge – a route needs at least three positive reviews.
Give a hike and help get a for every one of Garstang’s Slow Ways.

Limited services at Bilsborrow on route so I would recommend a slight detour through the village for a better choice. I walked from Garstang, a short pavement walk to a slope that gives easy access onto the towpath. Level walking and a good surface takes us along most of this route but lets take it bit by bit. The impressive stone aqueduct takes us and the canal over the River Wyre. The next option is to leave the towpath at Myersclough Hall Bridge and follow the A6 through Bilsborrow where there is a choice of services including a PO/shop and accommodation....

Crossing the road by the canal bridge we enter a grass field so more cattle here and of interest is the canal boundary post. Nice bit of walking although the ground is cattle trod but then at the disused quarry we are fenced in alongside the canal. We leave the canal for good after crossing another aqueduct and initially it’s a farm track. We cross the canal again at Bonds and continue along the road in Garstang crossing the River Wye and the Wye Way....

A really lovely picturesque route along a canal with lots of choices for pubs including one with an ice cream parlour....

This route was largely canal towpath. The towpath varies in its state to walk untroubled - a section early on had been renovated, probably due to breached canal edges; at other times the grass was undulating a little, and as already said, occasionally very muddy. Birdlife and attractive trees adorning canal side gardens were noted....

It took me a while to find how to get beyond the field boundaries, but the plotted route to Wyre Hall should now work. Also, approaching Wyre Hall, there is a set of stables not marked on the OS Map and the enclosed overgrown path alongside this, was accessed by a “gate” of two ropes and a hi-vis jacket! I emerged, via overgrown stiles, into St Michael’s in Wyre, hoping for the rest of the route to be well maintained as it was part of the Wyre Way long distance route. I had chats with two separate locals who confirmed that it was necessary to walk the main road (mostly with a pavement) for about half a mile, because the original route, as shown on the OS Map, has been purloined by local house owners and in particular by some campsite owners. When I was eventually able to access the path, which goes along the top of the flood defence embankment, the grass, flowers and nettles had reached waist height, so I cheated slightly and walked alongside it in the field, until the point where it is necessary to come back to the road to cross a channel flowing into the River Wyre....

The stile into a ditch and electric fence, photographed by Burnroyd, looked unsafe, although I didn't see it myself, as I was on the alternative route....

This route is a mixture of mostly little-used farm field paths and quiet country roads. There are a lot of stiles (sometimes a bit rickety) and narrow bridges, and some lack of signposting, but it is a very pleasant rural route, with good views across expansive farmland, and quiet enough for curlew and hares. Apart from the short section of B road at the north it was very quiet, and the B road was not too bad....

Taking the easterly version of the Wyre Way through fields and woods, the route crosses the M6 and railway at Woodacre Hall and heads south-west to meet the river Wyre again which it follows....

Walk this routeThis route follows the Lancaster Canal as far as possible, and crosses three aqueducts. Access to the canal at the Garstang end is via hard-surfaced slopes, and the towpath is tarmacked for the first mile....

This pleasant walk was completed from Lancaster southwards and follows the canal towpath for much of the way....

After this the route leaves the towpath again for a pointless and tricky diversion through fields, alongside the railway, and back to the towpath, via a slightly tricky descent....

As mentioned by Martinb the footbridge over the M6 has been removed and the path is diverted at Nan’s Nook, or Guys, to go underneath the M6 alongside the River Wyre to the south. After Cleveley Bridge there is a gravelled road, but this becomes private and the route follows a poorly signed footpath alongside a field, which was very overgrown, and I’m glad I wasn’t wearing shorts! After the railway bridge there is an excellent new off-road footpath, Scorton Millennium Way, alongside the river, but the route leaves the Wyre Way here to take a short cut across fields, although I would have preferred the Wyre Way route....

I walked this pleasant canal towpath route in a northerly direction from Garstang to Lancaster. Overall, this is a very pleasant walk with a wealth of wildflowers in summer (which make the towpath quite narrow in places), and a range of wildlife....

There are limited facilities between Garstang and Longridge, but refreshments may be available (subject to opening times) at a couple of pubs on or close to the route and there are a handful of good farm shops with minor diversion from the route....

A very flat walk across the reclaimed farmland of Over Wyre....

A very pleasant easy walk, following the Lancaster canal. Almost immediately the walk takes you away from the city and along the towpath where you will see a great variety of birds, swans, heron and farmland as well as canal barges Flat easy walking surface but can be very muddy if wet near to Lancaster....

Note a motorway footbridge has been removed and still showing on OS maps - not a problem though as a nearby alternative underpass is available....
