Surveys

We are working to build-up a picture of what routes look like. To do that we are asking volunteers to survey routes so that we can communicate features, obstacles and challenges that may make a route desirable or not.

Slow Ways surveyors are asked to complete some basic online training, but they are not vetted. If you are dependent on the survey information being correct in order to complete a route, we recommend that you think critically about the information provided. You may also wish to wait until more than one survey has been completed.

Help people know more about this route by volunteering to submit a survey.

14 Apr 2024 Spring

I walked from Faringdon to Bampton. Up to Littleworth, the route is the same as that from Faringdon to Standlake and to Kingston Bagpuize, but after Littleworth it turns north, passing through Carswell Marsh and crossing the Thames at the picturesque Rushey Lock. It's a typical Oxfordshire rural route, and relatively easy to follow, predominantly on tracks at the edge of fields; plenty of stiles, so not recommended for anything wheeled. In addition, a number of the stiles are higher than average.
I walked this in April 2024: the earlier months were very wet, and while the ground had mostly dried out, the relatively flat land on either side of the Thames showed evidence of flooding. You might want to take that into account if planning to walk this route.
Finally, a short section of the route is on land formerly used for RAF Bampton Castle. There's little evidence of military activity (the site ceased to be used in 2006); all that remains are a few rusty signs.
