Description

Esher to Kingston via Thames Ditton and Surbiton, finishing with a stretch along the riverside, then through Kingston marketplace to the meeting point at Kingston station.
The aim is that, with the exception of Surbiton High Street, there should be minimum 'A' and 'B' road walking, and maximum footpaths, parks, commons, woodland and riverside. I enjoy these challenges and I think I've come up with a pleasant route that ticks all the Slow Ways boxes!

The main difference between this route and the existing ones which go via Hampton Court is that a) the existing ones have a long stretch of 'B' road walking between Esher station and Hampton Court, which this one avoids, and b) this route keeps to the south side of the river and passes through the centre of Surbiton, by the railway station; it doesn't go by Hampton Court and Bushy Park. But it does have some riverside walking between Surbiton and Kingston for riverside fans!

Paths through woodland and commons may be muddy, but generally it's comfortable underfoot, with only a small change in elevation as the land drops from Esher to the river.

Good refreshments at Surbiton, and some lovely pubs on the way too

Surveys

We are working to build-up a picture of what routes look like. To do that we are asking volunteers to survey routes so that we can communicate features, obstacles and challenges that may make a route desirable or not.

Slow Ways surveyors are asked to complete some basic online training, but they are not vetted. If you are dependent on the survey information being correct in order to complete a route, we recommend that you think critically about the information provided. You may also wish to wait until more than one survey has been completed.

I walked this on a grey but not cold morning, from Esher to Kingston. There had been some rain in the previous week.

A surprisingly green route (photo #2, #3), which started right of the station by going across a golf course, but not one that is highly manicured. After passing a church (photo #1), the route connects lots of little parks together, and although there is some pavement walking, it's all next to quiet residential roads, until you hit Surbiton's busy centre.

After passing the station, and the clock tower (photo #4), the route then heads for the Thames. Which it follows nearly all the way to Kingston. There, it cuts through a very busy pedestrian area. I actually had to make a detour as the throng of people was too much to cut through to Market Place. Here there were lots of Christmas Market stalls which I passed by as soon as I could. Frequent trains from Kingston back into London.

We chose Eshkin Three (rather than one or two) as our destination was actually Surbiton, and this route goes straight past the station. Also we didn't quite start from the centre of Esher, as we combined this with Cobesh One, and cut a corner in joining the two routes. So actually we only walked about 70% of the route.

However... we really enjoyed this route, which makes a remarkably good job of navigating through the suburbs whilst making the most of the available parks and commons along the way.

Walked Esher to Kingston.
Really enjoyed this route which joins up several green spaces while dodging big roads and railway lines.
All the residential areas are pleasant and Surbiton high street is buzzy with pubs and cafes.
Good paths and easy to follow. Plenty of photos to give a flavour.
I stopped at Surbiton for lunch and then went on to Kingston where the route took me alongside the river and then through the old marketplace - pretty much all pedestrianised.
Good solid 4 stars.
