Surveys

We are working to build-up a picture of what routes look like. To do that we are asking volunteers to survey routes so that we can communicate features, obstacles and challenges that may make a route desirable or not.

Slow Ways surveyors are asked to complete some basic online training, but they are not vetted. If you are dependent on the survey information being correct in order to complete a route, we recommend that you think critically about the information provided. You may also wish to wait until more than one survey has been completed.

Help people know more about this route by volunteering to submit a survey.

I walked this route from Durham to Esh Winning. There is a fairly steep downhill from the station and then a steep uphill out of the city. Crossed the busy A167 then downhill past the site of the Battle of Neville's Cross. The route then takes you through a farm to the well marked trails of the Deerness Valley Way. This is a multi user ex railway path. It is very pleasant and easy walking along the path through woodland. There are occasional dips when it crosses rivers but otherwise the gradient is very gentle. Plenty of time to relax without having to worry about navigation or the state of the path underfoot.

I walked this route from Durham. It begins with steps and a steep down hill from the station, and then climbs steeply to Nevilles Cross following the cycle route along quiet roads and a steep descent to the bridge the R Browney. Just over a mile. Soon after it gains the Deerness trail along the former railway, followed until Esh Winning is reached. The trail is a delightful walk through a linear woodland. The trail is surfaced, on gentle gradients - except for the few places where bridges and viaducts have been removed and replaced by foot bridges with ramped approaches.
