Surveys

We are working to build-up a picture of what routes look like. To do that we are asking volunteers to survey routes so that we can communicate features, obstacles and challenges that may make a route desirable or not.

Slow Ways surveyors are asked to complete some basic online training, but they are not vetted. If you are dependent on the survey information being correct in order to complete a route, we recommend that you think critically about the information provided. You may also wish to wait until more than one survey has been completed.

Help people know more about this route by volunteering to submit a survey.

Truffle

13 Apr 2024 Spring

Walked Brandon to Ely direction. On first glance this route looked like it was going to be a lot of road. There was a reasonable bit but a lot is on farm tracks and gravel rather than busy tarmac. That said there is a bit near Lakenheath on the B1112 that had no path but an ok verge to jump onto when the road was both way traffic. It was largely a straight route in so safer than if windy. An alternative route would skip some of the road section into the village/town taking the dirt road/track and following the public footpath on the right of the river. Further down there is another opportunity to miss some road walking after Lakenheath which we checked out. I think this might be potentially overgrown in summer though as it was already nettles and bramble. The part of the route also after Shippea hill along the A road was a bit hairy too even though it followed the Hereward Way. That said there were a few road stretches where there was a path but a bit hidden/above on a bank which you might miss if you don't also have a map. Some stretches were lovely in the sun with woods, spring flowers and plenty of deer and hares. Other parts though were long straight stretches that went on for miles. It was relatively exposed in places and we had a headwind which we couldn't avoid. Note some sections didn't permit bicycles. Some of the tracks near Brandon were used by dirt bikes and although the riders were courteous we got quite a bit of dirt in the air. One footpath near the park in Brandon was thick, deep mud as it passed the sewage works. The path approaching Shippea Hill was a bit tough with long grass and nettles and the bridge at the end looked a bit unsettling and maybe not too safe. Some kissing gates but no stiles. This was largely flat. There are several railway stations on route so it can be broken into chunks rather than walk the whole way in one go. I think it's a bit longer than the 32.9km it's listed as.I would definitely walk stretches of this again but giving 3 out of 5 given the road stretches and some paths were not well maintained and more hard-going than they needed to be.
