Review of Slow Ways route Darstr one (Darvel to Strathaven)
I walked this route with two family members on an overcast but dry day in August 2023. The route is clearly mapped and presents no major obstacles to either walkers or wheelers. The route begins by following the pavement out of Darvel, heading east. Immediately after leaving the town, the route branches left and quite steeply uphill, passing through farmland along quiet country roads. Care is required at several sections in case of traffic, but on the day we visited, there were relatively few vehicles encountered. The route undulates up and down, winding between farms, past plantations and around a wind farm. Eventually it descends to the A71 just west of Strathaven. From here there is a simple walk along pavement until the centre of Strathaven is reached. My only complaints about the route are (1) that it is entirely on tarmac and (2) that diligence is required to guard against passing vehicles. Otherwise it is a well-mapped, easy to follow, interesting and enjoyable route.

This route is on pavement or single track roads the whole way. Quiet at the Darvel end with the single track roads towards Strathaven being busier. Lots of bike traffic on this route. A small detour (600m) half way along gives the opportunity to stop at a cafe.
