Surveys

We are working to build-up a picture of what routes look like. To do that we are asking volunteers to survey routes so that we can communicate features, obstacles and challenges that may make a route desirable or not.

Slow Ways surveyors are asked to complete some basic online training, but they are not vetted. If you are dependent on the survey information being correct in order to complete a route, we recommend that you think critically about the information provided. You may also wish to wait until more than one survey has been completed.

17 Mar 2024 Winter

I walked this on a reasonably warm and slightly sunny morning, from Croydon to Elmers End. There had been significant rain in the previous few days.

After finding my way from the busy transport hub at East Croydon, the route starts off through some residential streets (photo #1). It soon turns onto the Addiscombe Railway Park, which surface was temporarily being unavailable (photo #2), although there was a route through the grass. After a while it leaves the park for a residential road (photo #3). It is possible to continue a little further through the park, but then you need an awkward loop around the Blackhorse Lane tram stop. You then cross over the tram tracks for a short stretch through Ashburton Park, which was lovely (photo #4). Another residential street, Estcourt Road goes fairly down hill (photo #5), before a narrow path (photo #6) past the Arena tram stop gets you into South Norwood Country park (photo #7, #8). It was fairly muddy and swampy here, and an actual swamp blocked my route through (photo #9). A diversion path was also mud-logged (photo #10), so I diverted once more on the West side of the sporting fields to end up at Elmers End.

The detour due to the flooding wasn't that bad, and I think it mostly would be passable, so I'm not marking it as "no".

Pleasant walk with easy to find paths although Croelm Two misses out the Railway Park from Blackhorse Lane tram stop that's there in Croelm One. Note that Croydon Parks are closed at night (4.30 in Winter!) even though they are cycle routes. main roads have pedestrian crossings. Large Tesco store at Elmers End next to station.
