Description

After heading south out of Cowdenbeath it leaves the road heading east along a windturbine access track. Then after a short (slightly dodgy) road walking section the route is off-road and on core paths until the outskirts of Kirkcaldy. It goes along the banks of Camilla Loch, through areas where there may be grazing water-buffalo, past the remains of Balwearie Castle and beside Kirkcaldy Golf Course before arriving in Kirkcaldy's Beveridge Park (part of a Historic 18/19 century picturesque "Designed Landscape"). The route is about 3/4 off-road, not counting quiet, access only tracks.

Road-walking red-flag and alternative route
There are pavemented in-town road sections at either end but one road section, just north of Auchtertool, has some tight bends, be extra cautious. There is an alternative route which avoids this problem, it's very similar to joining Cowloc one and Lockir two. But this one may sometimes be preferable as that goes off the core paths (between Bankhead of Raith and Raith House) through an area (the Raith Estate) where the landowners are unwelcoming to walkers and access may be limited during the shooting season. If you use Cowloc+Lockir the map screenshot shows some footpaths you could use to skirt Lochgelly altogether.

Bring food and drink as there is nowhere to stop and eat or shop (Tiel restaurant in Auchtertool closed around 2018). There are kissing gates, self closing gates and some slopes of about 10%, and possibly stiles and muddy tracks. There may be a bus on the B925

Surveys

We are working to build-up a picture of what routes look like. To do that we are asking volunteers to survey routes so that we can communicate features, obstacles and challenges that may make a route desirable or not.

Slow Ways surveyors are asked to complete some basic online training, but they are not vetted. If you are dependent on the survey information being correct in order to complete a route, we recommend that you think critically about the information provided. You may also wish to wait until more than one survey has been completed.

Help people know more about this route by volunteering to submit a survey.
