01 Jul 2023 Summer

A lovely inland route between Lyme Regis and Colyton. It makes an interesting alternative to the undercliff coastal route between Lyme Regis and Seaton with the opportunity to take the vintage restored tram from Colyton to Seaton (or walk the short Seacol Slow Way).

We walked from Lyme to Colyton (and then on to Seaton) in good summer conditions with no wet underfoot. Walking was relatively easy although some undulations mean there is some ascent/decent involved.

The start from Lyme is along the delightful Lim path to Uplyme, which is well-used by locals and very easy to navigate. From Uplyme, the route follows minor roads typical of Devon lanes with high hedgerows but periodic views across the valley including to the magnificent viaduct (photo 1). The route then continues along easy to navigate tracks and bridleways to Musbury via Musbury Castle (photos 2-7), most of which is along the signposted East Devon Way (e.g. photos 5 and 8). Things flatten out towards Colyton as you cross into the Axe valley (photo 9). As you hit the outskirts of Colyton, you pass the terminus of the Seaton-Colyton restored tramway which provides a scenic excursion to the coast if you want to extend the day.

For a full day of (moderately challenging) walking you could walk the Lyme - Colyton - Seaton - Lyme triangle via lovely Slow Ways routes throughout.

29 Dec 2022 Winter

Very enjoyable scenic route. I walked from Colyton to Lyme in December and knew there was a lot of lane walking, but was concerned the rest would be a mud bath at this time of year. It wasn't! There was some mud and the fields around the River Axe crossing were very wet, but the ground was good to walk on everywhere.
It is quite a hilly walk, but there are some outstanding views, so the climbs are worth it. The lanes are really quiet until you get to Uplyme, but until then they are the sort with grass growing on the middle - I didn't see any traffic.
The route is really well signed and mostly it follows the East Devon Way, which is very well maintained, and is a great path into Lyme Regis. Once in town the route is a really nice traffic free, riverside, wooded walk, well used by tourists and locals.
Definitely recommend this walk, whatever the season.

28 Sep 2022 Autumn

Walking from Colyton despite the route having quite a few roads to walk, these were virtually traffic free .The highlight of the walk was the views from Musberry Hill, outstanding. With some of the route following the East Devon Way the signposting made life easier. Despite the wet weather at times it was a thoroughly enjoyable walk.

17 Apr 2022 Spring

This is a hilly route, one of the benefit of which is that the views are spectacular - whether of the sea (a bit), the countryside, and (for a very brief moment, and much more obvious if starting at Lyme Regis) the Lyme Regis viaduct. A significant amount of it is either on roads, or the well kept Lim valley path, but the roads in question are quiet lanes, sometimes dead-ends as far as vehicles are concerned, though you may come face to face with the occasional tractor. The village of Musbury is the only spot en route with a shop and a pub, at least until you get to Uplyme. A variety of gates and stiles, and the staircase bridge across the Axe make it unsuitable for anything wheeled. A delight.
