Help connect Colyton
Many Slow Ways have several route options. Some will be better than others, or good for different reasons.
Our goal is for each Slow Way to have at least one route that is verified and surveyed. To be verified – and get its snail badge – a route needs at least three positive reviews.
Give a hike and help get a for every one of Colyton’s Slow Ways.

This is a pleasant short route between the coast at Seaton and the medieval town of Colyton....

It makes an interesting alternative to the undercliff coastal route between Lyme Regis and Seaton with the opportunity to take the vintage restored tram from Colyton to Seaton (or walk the short Seacol Slow Way). For a full day of (moderately challenging) walking you could walk the Lyme - Colyton - Seaton - Lyme triangle via lovely Slow Ways routes throughout....

I've no doubt that in the summer months its a glorious route!...

I've nothing to add to Helen or Tim's great reviews. I suspect that someone will be able to suggest a more direct version, but this one is still ace....

The route leaves Colyton along the East Devon Way, following a footpath on the banks of the River Coly, which is well signed and waymarked. Past the village it follows a field footpath up a rather steep hill (photo 7) - for a less steep alternative you could stay on the minor road, which loops up and round to rejoin the slowway route at the top of the hill....

There is a little bit of lane walking, but the route mostly follows public footpaths through fields. The route starts out from Axminster on pavement beside the B3261, but then crosses over to pick up part of the NCN2 cycle route - a good traffic-free section of path which passes under the A35 (note that very tall people may need to duck slightly!), through fields then along a public byway into Kilmington....

The rest of the route is on good footpaths, some field crossings and quiet country lanes....

Once in town the route is a really nice traffic free, riverside, wooded walk, well used by tourists and locals....
Helen Gough
Walking from Colyton despite the route having quite a few roads to walk, these were virtually traffic free .The highlight of the walk was the views from Musberry Hill, outstanding. With some of the route following the East Devon Way the signposting made life easier. Despite the wet weather at times it was a thoroughly enjoyable walk....

The Axminster half of the route is all on lanes, or alongside roads....
Helen Gough
A significant amount of it is either on roads, or the well kept Lim valley path, but the roads in question are quiet lanes, sometimes dead-ends as far as vehicles are concerned, though you may come face to face with the occasional tractor....

Once you've left Axminster and cross the A35, you're on small country lanes....

However, the fact that the route follows hills beside the valley means that there are good views, and you can catch a glimpse of the Seaton Tramway from time to time, when the high Devon hedgerows allow it....

Quite a nice walk and not too strenuous, but it is quite mucky in places....
