Surveys
We are working to build-up a picture of what routes look like. To do that we are asking volunteers to survey routes so that we can communicate features, obstacles and challenges that may make a route desirable or not.
Slow Ways surveyors are asked to complete some basic online training, but they are not vetted. If you are dependent on the survey information being correct in order to complete a route, we recommend that you think critically about the information provided. You may also wish to wait until more than one survey has been completed.
Help people know more about this route by volunteering to submit a survey.

10 Apr 2024You can't cross the River Till at Etal on foot. If you start at Coldstream you'd find this out when you got there then you'd bewithin spitting distance of the pub and tearoom at Etal yet have another 5km/3mi to walk via Crookham etc. That's 2.5km/1.5mi further than if you used ColEta 2 in the first place.
Admittedly I haven't tried it myself but:
1) Tourist-friendly landowner puts up signs warning people that it's a path to nowhere and that the river there is too deep and cannot be crossed. Photo 1 (c) Andrew Tryon via Geograph.
2) Ordnance Survey maps don't show a right of way actually *across* the river. Photo 2.
3) Looks too deep and fast for pedestrians on Google Street View, more like a weir. Photos 3-5.
4) Someone had a good reason to add ColEta Two back when these first Slow Way routes were created!
Having said that there is a crossing marked on crowd-sourced Open Street Maps, so someone thinks you can use it. Maybe it's suitable in an off-road vehicle or on horseback or if the river is very low and you're happy to carry your shoes and get wet trousers. At your own risk!.
